4A Somerset Losee traveled to 4A Rancho last night, and it turned into a duel between two talented freshmen, [player_tooltip player_id='2477281' first='DJ' last='Hunter'] (Losee) and [player_tooltip player_id='2926859' first='Nya'Vari' last='Floyd-Johnson'] (Rancho).

Hunter came out aggressive and scored from all over the floor, including a pair of early triples. But Floyd-Johnson quickly answered on the other end, using his burst to repeatedly get downhill and finish through contact. It made for a fast-paced first quarter, with Losee holding a 19–16 edge.

In the second, Hunter continued to find ways to put the ball in the hoop, while his teammates started to get rolling. Fellow freshman Jake Bunyan scored in the paint, sophomores [player_tooltip player_id='2618949' first='Yasin' last='Musa'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2412305' first='Nick' last='Odum'] consistently got to the free-throw line, and senior Daniel Bristol knocked down shots of his own.

Rancho's backcourt duo of Floyd-Johnson and Zehlik Wyatt-Gowans kept the Rams within striking distance. Floyd-Johnson finished at the rim at a high rate, and Wyatt-Gowans heated up from deep, hitting a pair of threes and converting tough inside shots. Still, Losee created some separation and took a 46–35 lead into halftime.

Hunter got back to work in the third quarter, adding another three and attacking the rim. Bristol, Musa, Odum, and Bunyan all chipped in as the Lions' offense kept flowing.

Defensively, Losee tightened up and forced turnovers, making it difficult for Rancho to keep pace.

By the end of the third, it was 66–48 Losee.

Rancho didn't quit, though. Wyatt-Gowans put on a shooting display in the second half, drilling four threes, while Floyd-Johnson and Raymond Glasper added more buckets. Floyd-Johnson's leadership, especially from a 2029, stood out.

Despite the late push, Somerset Losee held on and secured the 83–70 win.

[player_tooltip player_id='2477281' first='DJ' last='Hunter'] put on a show last night. He scored from all three levels and kept the defense on their heels throughout the game. He also showcased his court vision by delivering several quality assists, and he didn't take possessions off on the defensive end. Overall, it was a top-notch performance from the freshman, and he looks more than prepared to help the Lions win more tough games as the season continues.

[player_tooltip player_id='2412305' first='Nick' last='Odum'] appears to have grown a few inches. He took the tip-off for the Lions and looked nearly as tall as Rancho's Navarius Page, who stands around 6'7–6'8. Offensively, Odum had a solid game, connecting on several free throws and two 3-pointers. If he can continue to find his rhythm, he'll be a difficult scoring option to slow down.

Daniel Bristol provided 15 points for the Somerset Lions yesterday. He made some sharp cuts and consistently found clean looks, even knocking down a 3-pointer. All in all, he capitalized on most of his opportunities, and I liked the way he played.

On the other end of the court, Musa covered ground with his lateral quickness and he applied good ball pressure.

His stroke is incredibly consistent, and his confidence was evident. I also liked how he didn't always settle for the long ball, as he got into the lane as well.
