On Monday, Dec 8th I watched the match-up of 4A Deer Valley Skyhwaks hosting the 4A Coconino Panthers. The Skyhawks are one of the top teams in 4A and the Panthers should make the 4A playoffs.

I checked out two levels with JV and Varsity.

Here were the standouts on the night

Junior Varsity Game (74-46 Deer Valley won)

[player_tooltip player_id='2552786' first='Sencere' last='Sandez'] Deer Valley

A scoring lead guard who can play on or off the ball. He can hit the three off the catch and makes smart reads to teammates. He will consistently make the extra pass as an unselfish player. He is quick on the ball defensively and in the passing lanes to collect steals. He scored 7+ points.

[player_tooltip player_id='3190044' first='Anthony' last='Washington'] Deer Valley

A newcomer for me is a talented scoring point guard. He will drive and kick it and he is a next level live dribble passer. He is very elusive to the basket and has a sharp crossover and a nice burst to get to the basket with some speed. He will hit the pull-up three or off the catch. He has some swag to his game. He scored 10+ points with multiple assists.

[player_tooltip player_id='3190303' first='Aiden' last='Bedonie'] Coconino

A pure point with a good pace to the game. He can score it with tough euro steps and hit the three off the catch or pull-up. He has impressive court vision with great timing. He has a deceptively tight handle and crossover and I would not be surprised to see him become the starting PG next year. He scored 10+ points with multiple assists.

Varsity Game (75-40 Deer Valley won)

[player_tooltip player_id='2146267' first='Micah' last='Andrews'] Deer Valley (Pictured)

A dynamic two-way point guard who can score. He locks up his opponents with his next level quickness laterally. His recovery time to close out to a shooter is elite and he will even block the shot at times. He will score with jab step threes, bursts to the basket, pull-ups from deep and he will hesitate into a jumper to freeze the defender and rise up. He scored 13+ points.

[player_tooltip player_id='2145741' first='Elias' last='Riley'] Deer Valley

A bigger lead guard is another defensive minded player. He disrupted the Panthers offense all night long with ripping pockets consistently which led to layups or high flying dunks on the break. He will grab a ball off the glass and take it coast to coast and in the half court set. He can get downhill after a nice hesitation move with his impressive first step. He scored 12+ points.

[player_tooltip player_id='1875720' first='Sergio' last='Gonzales'] Deer Valley

One of their top guards set the tone early with blow by's with his left hand and finished with finger rolls and quick burst dribble drives getting downhill. He is tough on defense to collect steals with his quickness and will make a play for a teammate. He scored 8+ points.

[player_tooltip player_id='1875719' first='Simon' last='Gonzales'] Deer Valley

The twin brother is another tough cover. He came off the bench in this one but wasted little time being a difference maker. He was in attack mode and scored with floaters, mid-range fall ways and gets to the basket thru contact or gets fouled. His scoring will be needed more and more if they want to get back to the 4A Finals. He scored around 10 points.

[player_tooltip player_id='2506451' first='Trey' last='Wenk'] Deer Valley

A bigger scoring combo guard can catch and shoot it from the three point line. He moves without the ball consistently and will move the ball to make smart reads. He can burst to the basket and use the floater game. He scored 5+ points.

[player_tooltip player_id='2854671' first='Jonathan' last='Ortiz'] Deer Valley

A quick scoring point guard reads the court with drive and kicks and he will get to the rim after a ball fake and score it with layups or find teammates in stride. He comes off the bench and immediately produces. He will have bigger minutes next year with three top senior guards graduating. He scored 5+ points with multiple assists.

[player_tooltip player_id='2947346' first='Giovanni' last='Nielsen'] Deer Valley

The bigger wing can defend multiple positions for the Skyhawks and comes in off the bench and produces. He rebounds well in his area and will defend 2-5. He will score with bursts to the basket ripping thru with and-1's in traffic. His length and size help him with everything he does. He scored 4+ points.

[player_tooltip player_id='2674054' first='Gavin' last='Greene'] Coconino

The top producer of the night for the Panthers was Greene. He is an inside and out threat with corner threes, off the ball cuts, fall aways, post ups with his back to the basket and hook shots. He rebounds well in his area and scored 11-13 points.

[player_tooltip player_id='2674056' first='Fitz' last='Guinan'] Coconino

Their top shooter in the program has a little size and a stronger frame for a scoring guard. He can dribble drive to the basket using his strength and decent handle but he is a catch and shoot three point type. He is a sneaky good passer and scored 8-10 points.

[player_tooltip player_id='2672883' first='Oryon' last='Huayhualla'] Coconino

A unique undersized inside and out power forward with a cerebral skillset. The southwaw can shoot it from mid-range and in and then work inside to score with offensive rebound put backs. He handles the ball well and he is a true point forward with beautiful passes. He scored 6+ points with many assists.

[player_tooltip player_id='2674118' first='Hashke' last='Nelson'] Coconino

The starting point guard had his hands full versus the glut of talented Deer Valley guards. He managed to make some plays and handled most of the ball pressure. He scored with quick triggered threes and downhill drives. He had 5+ points.

On Monday, Dec 8th I watched the match-up of 4A Deer Valley Skyhwaks hosting the 4A Coconino Panthers. The Skyhawks are one of the top teams in 4A and the Panthers should make the 4A playoffs.
