Wednesday Minnesota High School Boys Basketball kicked off with four games, and the two biggest we got were games between Mississippi River rivals Monticello versus Rogers and Hopkins traveled to White Bear Lake.

Monticello For Real in 4A?

Monticello makes the leap up a class with increased enrollment and coming off a 24-5 season and section final loss to Totino-Grace. 2027 junior [player_tooltip player_id='2140576' first='Carson' last='Deibele'] and 2026 senior [player_tooltip player_id='1560822' first='Rhys' last='Nebben'] look primed to lead the Magic. The Magic are far removed from their single win single a few years ago.

Deibele is a 3-sport athlete, football, basketball and baseball. He has good size at six-foot-foot-inches and plays the guard position and small forward. He scored 27 to lead all scores. Nebben is a six-foot-three-inch guard that played with the [program_tooltip program_id='2888391' first='Minnesota' last='Comets'] had 9 points and a perfect lob pass to Deibele for a fantastic finish at the rim.

The Magic got 5 or more points from six other players and Sophomores [player_tooltip player_id='2835380' first='Johnny' last='Moore'], who had a good year at wide receiver, and [player_tooltip player_id='2839191' first='Alec' last='Deah'] are prospects to keep an eye on. Six-foot-three-inch 2026 senior Muhammed Sanyang was a excellent disrupted on the perimeter using length and quickness.

Hopkins Got More Help

2026 senior transfer from Cooper [player_tooltip player_id='2388499' first='Anthony' last='Byrd'] gave Hopkins 18 points and 10 rebounds in his senior debut for the Royals. Byrd is more of a transitional front-court player with solid speed and quickness. He'll benefit from strong passing guards like recent North Dakota commit [player_tooltip player_id='1550877' first='Jayden' last='Moore'] and his quarterback 2028 brother [player_tooltip player_id='2560534' first='Tre' last='Moore']. The Moores combined for 15 assists.

Fellow 2026 guard [player_tooltip player_id='1560839' first='Xavier' last='Frelix'] scored 19 points for the Royals showing he can play off the ball next to a dominant ball handler like Moore. Frelix who's six-foot-two-inches moved over from Park Center when longtime Park Center coach stepped down and joined Hopkins is primed to show his abilities. Frelix has offers from Concordia St Paul, Sioux Falls, Minot State and Augsburg.

2027 #2 ranked wing [player_tooltip player_id='2420169' first='Ahmed' last='Nur'] showed his length is going to be a serious problem for teams when trying to score as he blocked 8 shots. Nur's ability in space with the ball and more and more he can play on the wing he'll see his high-level college interest rise.

2026 six-foot-eight-inch White Bear Lake center [player_tooltip player_id='1560749' first='Colin' last='Piper'] who is committed and signed to D2 school Florida Tech scored 22 points while fellow 2026 senior guard Nick Cardenas had 19 points while hitting four 3-pointers. 2027 six-foot-four-inch forward [player_tooltip player_id='2140684' first='Preston' last='Crider'] added 12 points for the Bears.

https://twitter.com/NSPNminnesota/status/1993861357637120426?t=urRcp9HOM5nNwkc-yeviPQ&s=19
