Breakout '26 Candidates: DC Live

Marlon has been setting the tone all summer with his consistent production. He will be riding a wave of momentum entering the live period following his dominant summer league performances with Kipp. Marlon is a strong scorer that likes to get his shots off the dribble. He can break down defenders with his shifty ball-handling, and rises over contests well when in the midrange. Calhoun has deep range and will let his shot go any time he feels space. It's nice to see the way Marlon has progressed his game as a more intentional scorer, picking spots to attack better and taking more efficient shots. This weekend will be a test to his improvement as recruits will surely be watching.     Bryton has alreaady made an impact with his Carroll squad this summer. He is an athletic wing/forward that imposes his will inside the paint. Strong rebounder that gets it done on the glass offensively and defensively. Barrett gets out and runs in transition well. Likes to finish the break strong at the basket. He plays to his strengths and helps impact winning while he's on the floor. I would like to see more of Bryton's perimeter game and decision making out of the pick-and-roll. DC Live will give us a great look at how Bryton fits into the Carroll roster.     Mpumi impressed me as he and his team rolled through the competition at MADE Hoops earlier this summer. He is a solid pick and roll man and is effective finishing in the paint. Liked the way Masimini used his size well against other bigs, and he effected the game on both sides of the court. Recorded a couple blocks each time out, showing great timing and instincts. I enjoyed watching how his play energized the team. Strong play from Mpumelelo as the main big man on the Takeover squad. Will be interesting to see him with St. Albans against some DC powerhouses.     With the backcourt opening up, both Shackleford and [player_tooltip player_id='2148719' first='Mekhi' last='Polk'] will see a lot more touches. Polk is experienced and well-prepared for the challenge of being the main guard for Tech Prep. He has had to take on many different roles in his high school career, but now is the time for him to showcase all parts of his game. Fierce defender and a great facilitator at the point. Mekhi can be relied upon to show up each game for the team and play with maximum effort. Scores the ball at a much higher volume when playing AAU ball, so I'll be watching to see if he can incorporate all facets into his arsenal for Friendship Tech.     Gavin impressed much of the scout team with his high-level play last season. He was the engine that made DCI run and he had a variety of impressive game. Gavin can put up 20 points and 5 assists any given game. He mixes his playmaking with his scoring very well, always seeking his teammates in the halfcourt. Gavin creates well for his team with the ball in his hands, and he can spot up on the perimeter. Big threat beyond the arc and in the pick-and-roll game. Big expectations for Gavin as he enters his senior year. Scouts should tune in this weekend to see the PG get to work.
