Marlon Calhoun
About Marlon
Expert Analysis
William Lloyd III | Prep Hoops Scout
Marlon has been lighting up scoreboards all season, at an average of just about 20 points a game. He’s a big shot-maker who believes he can get any look he wants, and his height gives him an advantage because he can see over the smaller guards and still make plays. Marlon handles the ball well enough to create his own space, then rises up and gets clean looks off the bounce. He’s been effecting all facets of the game which has been key to Kipp’s historic season. Averaging around 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 1.5 blocks each game. Recruiters have been tracking him for a reason, because production like this across 4 solid seasons is hard to dismiss. Marlon has been one of the most consistent offensive threats in the public school/DC area, and his stock continues to rise every week.

There are a lot of useful pieces on the Kipp DC Legacy College Prep roster, and Calhoun has quietly become as consistently productive as anyone. He’s a solid, skilled guard who reliably and efficiently fills it up as a scorer within the flow of the action. Calhoun can handle the ball, set up others, and create opportunities for himself. He’s able to mix it up well from all levels or find chances as a cutter/spot-up threat. Calhoun competes to make his presence felt defensively and is a capable rebounder for his size. He continues to highlight college-level ability. Scored 19 points, dished out 4 assists and 2 steals against tough Coolidge team.

Marlon is another guard who came out with a different kind of pace to the game than his teammates and the opposition. Showed much more maturity in his decision making, attacking spots in the zone and showing control through the trap defense KIPP faced on Saturday. Marlon had a few plays where he waited patiently for the defense to show a weak spot, and found the gap to attack rather than forcing difficult drives to the rim where defenders are looming. Got to the basket when needed, found his teammates on the break and in the halfcourt running through defensive reads. Marlon made an impact defensively as well off-the-ball, reading plays before they happened to come out with breakaway steals. Showed some nice effectiveness outside of the high-level scoring ability we are accustomed to.

Marlon can light up the defense with or without space at times. Good height for a guard, does well at shooting over contests with his quick and high release point. Marlon has no problem putting the ball on the floor and taking a couple dribbles to get into his jumper. He is comfortable taking a lot of shots as the main player on his team. Does a good job creating efficient looks for himself throughout the game. Adjusts to the defense well and always pops off for 20+ or close-to due to his limitless range and confidence.

-Calhoun stood out above the rest as a standout performer as the MVP on his way to a SL championship with KIPP. Calhoun was hitting a ton of perimeter shots both off the catch and off the bounce to pace his team throughout all 3 games. His activity on the glass was consistent and he found a way to come up with some big defensive rebounds in traffic to close out possessions for KIPP. His defensive activity really picked up after the 1H of game one and never really dropped off, serving as an effective guard defender that helped down well on bigs to contest shots around the rim. Like the improvements that he has made as a slasher and he has definitely added a dimension to his game by improving his vertical pop.

Marlon has had his name buzzing all summer long. Dropping off 20+ point games against anyone who steps up to face him. Scores at the basket or from the perimeter alike. Marlon is starting to complete his game and learning when to take certain shots. The team looks to be comfortable with Marlon at the helm and he looks the part as the go-to. Can score off-the-dribble at a high level and starting to read defensive coverages better now as he enters his final year.

Marlon game complements Jeremiah very well. Because he is a “GO” hard two-way guard that does a little bit of everything to help his team win. Can score and defend different positions and he does not need the ball to be effective. He is just scratching the surface of his game. His production and consistency will continue to rise as he improves his overall skill level by continuing to work on his game.

Marlon has been setting the tone all summer with his consistent production. He will be riding a wave of momentum entering the live period following his dominant summer league performances with Kipp. Marlon is a strong scorer that likes to get his shots off the dribble. He can break down defenders with his shifty ball-handling, and rises over contests well when in the midrange. Calhoun has deep range and will let his shot go any time he feels space. It’s nice to see the way Marlon has progressed his game as a more intentional scorer, picking spots to attack better and taking more efficient shots. This weekend will be a test to his improvement as recruits will surely be watching.

Calhoun was a guard impress me with his smooth play. Showing his strong plays off the bounce, uses his size well, attacks in transition and mixes it up well offensively impacting the game on/off the ball, and showed to be a proven leader on the court. Calhoun feel and poise was evident throughout the game. Used the dribble to get any spot on the floor and scored the ball from all 3 levels. Calhoun has the potential College level. A player to watch this spring and summer.

Marlon got off to a cold start this game but showed up big when the team needed him most. Really put the sealing finish on a game that Kipp was trailing most of the night. Calhoun fired off 3 straight three-pointers late in the 4th quarter to push Kipp over the top and grow their lead. Even in his struggles through the first half Marlon was able to get clean looks past the arc using screens. Used his handle well at other times to create a look off the dribble. Nice patience and calmness about his game that helps him maintain composure even through early misses.
