On Saturday, I attended the New England Jam Fest at Dana Barros Basketball Club in Stoughton, MA. The event was filled with college prospects (and coaches) from all levels, and there were some really awesome matches. Over the next couple days, I'll be breaking down some of the standout players I saw. As always, it's impossible to catch every game and every player, and I try to strike a balance between seeing as many players as possible while also getting to know their games enough to accurately scout them.

Here are some centers who impressed me.

Mark is a true 7-footer who runs the floor well and protects the rim defensively for Middlesex Magic UAA. For his size, he looks pretty athletic running the floor and can hold his own in the paint against smaller, denser big men because of his strength. Most intriguing was his potential in terms of his shooting ability; he has a nice-looking release and some solid rotation on his shot. If the sophomore can continue to develop his shooting and perimeter skills, the sky's the limit. He should have a larger role at Cushing next season and will likely garner a lot of scholarship attention.

This is my first time watching Costello this AAU season, and I was really impressed with his growth and development. At Newman, he didn't get as much playing time and largely backed up some super high quality upperclassmen, but he showed a refined skillset for the Magic on Saturday. He looks more comfortable finishing with contact and using his big frame, and his shot looks even more silky than it used to. The 6-foot-10 wing/forward is ridiculously intriguing and should definitely be on D1 coaches' radars, even at the highest level. He should get more meaningful minutes for Newman next year and will impress.

Djanogly is a good deal bigger and stronger than the last time I saw him play, which allows him to better fight on the boards both offensively and defensively. The 6-foot-10 center doesn't handle it too much on the perimeter (he did show some flashes in transition), but he's a very well-conditioned rim-runner who understands how to set screens when it comes to angles and timing. Djanogly also really impressed me with his drop coverage defensively — really solid positioning. He's a scholarship guy if I had to guess, or maybe the highest level D3 possible.

Mayfield impressed me with his post moves and feel in the paint. No matter how many little guards surrounded him in the lane, he was able to keep the ball high over his shoulders and finish consistently. He fought super hard for offensive rebounds and was a man amongst boys in that regard -- his ridiculously long arms certainly help. He also showed some fire when he matched up against an opposing big who was talking lots of smack to him; he raised his intensity and physicality level and showed that he can compete hard. Mayfield should find a D3 fit and be a good rim-running center with some offensive juice.

This was my first time watching Angyal play, and he wow'd me with his fundamentals and IQ. He's a great operator out of the high post and is effective in the dribble hand-off game as a result of his passing and screening ability. He understands angles and positioning and can also bully his way to the hoop when help defenders don't collapse on him in the paint. Solid post moves on the block, too, with pretty good footwork. Angyal is probably a scholarship player, especially if he can improve his lateral quickness and figure out some perimeter skills.
