who won out, being named the 2025 Iowa Mr. Basketball by the Iowa Print Sportswriters Association. The IPSWA pegged Jirak as the choice at their annual meeting on Friday morning.
A 6-8/6-9 big man who can impact the game in a number of ways with his combination of size, toughness, and skill, he averaged 16.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.1 blocks per game on 59% shooting (38.1 3P%, 71.2 FT%). He has the skills of a point guard, the position that he played for years before experiencing a six-inch growth spurt between his freshman and sophomore years, when he moved into a post position. His ability to initiate the offense out of the post or the high-post, his vision, his ball-handling, and his ability to stretch the floor, made the Tigers an extremely potent offense. The added inches also made him a dominant rim protector and one of the most impactful defensive players in the state.
A three-year varsity starter and key member of three straight Class 4A championship teams, Jirak was named to the all-tournament team as a senior following another dominant week at the state tournament.
Jirak becomes the second player from Valley to be honored as Mr. Basketball, joined by Peter Jok in 2013. He will go play his college basketball for Ben Jacobson at Northern Iowa, where he should be able to make an early impact for the Panthers with his ability to pass and protect the rim.
