The 4A Elite 8 tips off tonight, and the pressure is at an all-time high. Every team left standing has talent, but sometimes it takes an X-factor—someone who can swing a game with their defense, scoring, or sheer will to win—to push a team over the top. These five players have the skills and impact to make the difference in whether their squads advance to the final four or see their season come to an end.

the kind of player who does whatever it takes to help his team win. He's a defensive menace, taking on the toughest matchups and making life miserable for opposing scorers. With his length and quickness, he can guard multiple positions, disrupt passing lanes, and bring the kind of energy that fires up his team. Offensively, he moves well without the ball, finds ways to score in transition, and crashes the glass for extra possessions. While he's still growing as a shooter, Thompson's defense, effort, and leadership make him an irreplaceable piece for Chambers as they push for a state title.

Allen is the kind of point guard every team wants in big moments. He's got a tight handle, great vision, and a natural ability to control the tempo of a game. Whether he's threading the needle for an assist, pulling up for a jumper, or getting to the rim, Allen knows how to keep defenses guessing. He also brings intensity on the defensive end, using his quick hands to force turnovers and create transition opportunities. If New Hanover is going to move on, Allen will need to be at his best tonight.

Reyes is a pure scorer who can get hot in an instant. He's got deep range, a smooth mid-range game, and the strength to finish through contact at the rim. His quick first step makes him tough to stay in front of, and when defenses collapse on him, he's more than capable of making the right pass. While his offense is his biggest weapon, Reyes also competes on defense and plays with an edge. If Garner needs a bucket late in the game, Reyes is the guy they'll turn to.

As a freshman, Niles Nelson has already made a name for himself. He's an explosive athlete who plays above the rim, throwing down dunks and finishing tough plays in traffic. But he's not just a highlight-reel player—he's also an efficient scorer who takes smart shots and makes the most of his opportunities. His perimeter game is coming along, and once he adds a consistent outside shot, he'll be nearly impossible to guard. Nelson's athleticism and ability to impact both ends of the floor make him a huge X-factor for Myers Park tonight.

Pierce is a sniper from deep, and if he gets going, watch out. He just knocked down eight threes against Weddington, proving he can light up the scoreboard in a hurry. But he's not just a catch-and-shoot guy—he can create his own shot off the dribble and is comfortable pulling up from mid-range or getting to the rim. His ability to stretch the floor opens up opportunities for his teammates, making North Meck's offense that much harder to guard. If the game is close down the stretch, Pierce has the shooting touch to be a game-changer.
