But Oregon responded with a big run to close out the game. One of the keys to Oregon's success was the defense it played on Franklin junior [player_tooltip player_id='2500826' first='Jacob' last='Misslich'] (6-4), who had scored 47 points in the Sabers' 76-67 win last week against Westosha Central. Misslich had 20 points, but he was hounded all evening by a variety of Oregon defenders and nothing came easy for him. The other big key was the strong play of Karvala, who finished with 35 points and 14 rebounds. Karvala's strong showing also included five blocked shots, four assists and three steals.

STAR OF THE GAME

Karvala started off slowly for Oregon as he missed seven of his first eight shots. But after that, the 6-foot-7 wing prospect was stellar. He made 10 of his final 12 shots, went three-of-five from three-point range, and made 10 of 11 foul shots en route to netting 35 points. He also grabbed 14 rebounds, had five blocked shots, distributed four assists and came up with three steals. There is no denying the talent Karvala brings to the game as he can pass, shoot and dribble, and is a very difficult player to guard as exemplified by his 11 free throw attempts. Toss in his verticality, which is something to behold, and you can see why Karvala is the state's No,. 1-ranked junior in the Prep Hoops Wisconsin Player Rankings.

Competing in the Badger Large Conference isn't for the faint of heart so Oregon will need players other than Vaugh Karvala to step up their games in order for the Panthers to finish near the top of the eight-team circuit. Hoffer is one of those players who can make a big difference for the Panthers. He is strong with the ball, gets into the lane off the dribble and can use his physical strength and pivoting skill to finish at the rim. He also distributes the ball well to his teammate. Hoffer finished with 10 points against Franklin and is averaging just over 8.0 ppg on the season.

Hook turned in a very strong performance for Oregon as he scored 10 points off the bench. Hook continually got to the basket off the dribble and also ran the floor well and scored in transition for coach Chris Siebert. Hook is one of a handful of guards capable of scoring in double figures on any given night, and his strong showing on Thursday was most welcome as it took some pressure off of [player_tooltip player_id='2045301' first='Vaughn' last='Karvala'] and provided a needed boost to the Panthers' offense.

Misslich is making a name of himself during his junior year of high school as his strong perimeter shooting stroke has been a huge asset for Franklin. The 6-foot-4 Misslich was chased all over the floor Thursday evening by several different Oregon defenders, including Karvala. Still, he managed to toss in a team-best 20 points. Misslich's release from deep is picture perfect and usually finds the bottom of the net. Misslich is averaging 19.2 ppg and is one of the premier perimeter shooters in the Southeast Conference.

Maciejewski is a strong athlete who knows how to play basketball the right way and is a key piece to the Franklin attack. With the Oregon defense laser focused on stopping Misslich, Maciejewski used his size and physical strength to get into the lane and score. He finished with 12 points and drew three fouls on Oregon defenders. He is averaging just under 15 ppg for the Sabers, and can guard different positions on the floor due to his size, strength and mobility.

THE BIG PICTURE

Oregon needed a solid victory after dropping three of its last four contests, including a 73-55 home loss to Verona last week. Other than a spell in the second half when Franklin cut a 14-point deficit to just two, the Panthers turned in a solid performance in the non-conference game. After Franklin had its run, the Panthers put together a strong final five minutes to win by 12 points. Oregon improved to 5-3 under Chris Siebert and returns to Badger Large Conference play Saturday at Watertown.

Franklin had a big 76-67 win over Westosha Central last week behind that remarkable 47-point outing by Misslich. Although the Sabers played hard and battled back from a big hole, they didn't have an answer for Karvala and Co. down the stretch. Franklin slipped to 4-4 on the campaign and returns to action with another non-league outing on Friday against visiting West Bend East.

BOXSCORE

Franklin (25-42 = 67)
Misslich 20, Haim 5, Maciejewski 12, Verges 7, Ertl 0, Schiek 7, Stamborski 14, Peters 0, Wendel 0, Martens 0, Reifschneider 0.
