On Friday Night I watched two top 25 PHI teams square off in a regular season contest. #9 Brother Rice hosted #22 Fenwick. Brother Rice already charted a win over the Friars in an early contest during the opening week of the season. Tonight would be no different as Brother Rice would control the game from start to end on Senior Night and win 53-32.

Brother Rice Dynamic Guard Duo

The tandem of 2025 [player_tooltip player_id='2538898' first='Jack' last='Weigus'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1545120' first='Marcos' last='Gonzales'] just seemed to be too much for Fenwick. [player_tooltip player_id='2538898' first='Jack' last='Weigus'] was the first one to strike with his hot shooting in the first quarter. His movement away from the ball was key to him getting open shots. Weigus is a lights-out shooter who only needed a slither of space and before you knew it the ball was going through the net. He paced the Crusaders going into the half with 8 points finishing with 15. In the third quarter Marcos took the lead and started hot with his own pair of threes. Then right after he drove in the lane and dropped some assists off to Weigus and [player_tooltip player_id='2538949' first='KJ' last='Morris']. These two guards made it impossible for Fenwick to even start a run. Gonzales led the way with 17 points.

Friars Never Found Footing

Fenwick's offense couldn't get going after having a very impressive week beating top ten ranked Rich Township at home. The Friars were hoping to catch that magic again but never got it going. Fenwick top scoring guys just struggled to score and match the energy of the Crusaders. [player_tooltip player_id='2724288' first='Nathaniel' last='Marshall'] found pockets in the game to be effective. Had a nice spin move while getting to the basket and he was fouled in the process. Ty Marcariola just wasn't able to get free to hit any shots. [player_tooltip player_id='2105305' first='Dominick' last='Ducree'] did open the game with a bucket but he also went cold the rest of the game as Brother Rice's defense stifled anything Fenwick tried to do offensively. In a very tough Chicago Catholic League the Friars can only learn from this game and get better before state next month.

Brother Rice Work Horeses

The Crusaders seem to always get a huge contribution from senior [player_tooltip player_id='2538949' first='KJ' last='Morris'] and senior [player_tooltip player_id='1766504' first='Caden' last='Workman']. Morris is the athletic wing player and is maybe the best slasher on the team. As many people look to cover Gonzales and Weigus on the perimeter he's the guy who slips behind the defense and scores the tough buckets. He had several moments in the paint when he out-battled guys on the glass and scored through contact. Workman didn't score much this game but he was instrumental in keeping possessions alive with his rebounds and timely screens to free up space for the guards. These two will be instrumental in a Brother Rice state run.
