In July, we updated the 2027 player rankings. Point guards are inevitably the most heavily populated position and the players below are the best college's can find.

Best in the Class

The #1 player in 2027, as of July 2024, is [player_tooltip player_id='2101889' first='Justin' last='Frison']. Younger brother of former State Champion Jordan Frison, Justin is a basketball demon with handles to spare.

[player_tooltip player_id='2133810' first='Ty' last='Cobb'] (Upperman) is the #2 point guard prospect, and #3 overall in the state. State Champion [player_tooltip player_id='2283268' first='Greg' last='Spight'] is chasing Justin for best '27 in Memphis. After running with [program_tooltip program_id='2078772' first='Team' last='Thad'] all summer, Spight is certain on the minds of his peers already. State Runner-up [player_tooltip player_id='2133797' first='Bryson' last='Wade'] and State Champion [player_tooltip player_id='2236492' first='Kobi' last='Jackson'] (@PrepHoopsTN Combine Young Player MVP) round out the top five point guards.

Spright scored 10 points with 2 assists and 2 rebounds in the title game.

Smaller Point Guards

Any point guard shorter than 5-foot-10 fits neatly into the category of smaller point guards. Undersized guards thrive and occasionally dominate at the high school level and yet our rankings are based upon basketball ceiling. How far can they go? College teams infrequently feature multiple sub-5-foot-10 guards. Not all, but some coaches do not like playing anybody in that 6' range either.

Take a look at the best smaller point guards.

[player_tooltip player_id='2236492' first='Kobi' last='Jackson']
[player_tooltip player_id='2207470' first='Kohl' last='Ward']
[player_tooltip player_id='2291144' first='Cassius' last='Vaughn']
[player_tooltip player_id='2333265' first='Condis' last='Cherry']
[player_tooltip player_id='2236515' first='Cornelius' last='Marshall']
[player_tooltip player_id='2367390' first='Ze'keice' last='McCarver']
[player_tooltip player_id='2499038' first='Luke' last='Mathey']
[player_tooltip player_id='2449527' first='Dylan' last='Love']
[player_tooltip player_id='2274878' first='Jace' last='Ward']
[player_tooltip player_id='2463007' first='D'marquese' last='Howard']
[player_tooltip player_id='2194514' first='Noah' last='Hughes']
[player_tooltip player_id='2101886' first='Cody' last='Colvin']
[player_tooltip player_id='2463357' first='Bra'Sharion' last='Cannon']

[player_tooltip player_id='2207470' first='Kohl' last='Ward'], [player_tooltip player_id='2274878' first='Jace' last='Ward'], [player_tooltip player_id='2236492' first='Kobi' last='Jackson'], and [player_tooltip player_id='2333265' first='Condis' last='Cherry'] are excellent ball-handlers. Each of them is gifted as a penetrator, which enables them to get into the lane.

[player_tooltip player_id='2499038' first='Luke' last='Mathey'], [player_tooltip player_id='2236492' first='Kobi' last='Jackson'], and [player_tooltip player_id='2101886' first='Cody' last='Colvin'] all showed off better than average shooting touch within the last nine months during an in-person @PrepHoopsTN evaluation.

For a shorter guard to survive against taller defenders consistently they must do something special or have something special (athleticism). Of the listed players the most athletic are: [player_tooltip player_id='2463357' first='Bra'Sharion' last='Cannon'], [player_tooltip player_id='2463007' first='D'marquese' last='Howard'], [player_tooltip player_id='2333265' first='Condis' last='Cherry'], [player_tooltip player_id='2367390' first='Ze'keice' last='McCarver'], and [player_tooltip player_id='2291144' first='Cassius' last='Vaughn'].

Howard and Cannon registered elite sprint times in June, while Condis carried Austin-East for several game segments. McCarver's older brother, Ashton McCarver ('22) signed to Dyersburg State Community College out of Smyrna. Middle brother [player_tooltip player_id='1663715' first='Tyreque' last='McCarver'] holds two D1 football offers but belongs in the Top 75 of the remarkable 2025 class as a hooper, as well.
