PH Freshman Showcase: Team 5 Evals

The talent level was high and there was a lot of it at the Prep Hoops Michigan Freshman Showcase. We're going to give you an inside look at the players and performances from the Team 5. The young man was fast. That continued to draw my attention. He could build speed and a lot of it, both with or without the ball in his hands. Gill was able to connect from mid range with an impressive pull up from the wing. He also showed that he could pass on the move in the open floor with a pretty dump off for a score.     White is a talented guard that contributed in all phases of the game at the Freshman Showcase. His perimeter defense was locked in as he provided pressure on the ball which created turnovers. White's defense turned to offense directly on a steal and score. Offensively he showed 3 point range on his jumper. He also showed the ability to distribute with a nice kick across the lane to a cutter.     Mullan seemed at his best when facing the rim and getting downhill. He had a knack for drawing fouls on physical straight line drives to the rim. Mullan did this from both the wing and the baseline. He was active around the rim and able to pick up put back buckets. Mullan looked solid as a passer and was able to advance the ball quickly up the floor with the pass.     Northview will welcome a tough defensive minded guard into their program. He showed off some great defensive vision at the Freshman Showcase. He used quick hands to disrupt the ball handler and he did it without fouling. Jefferson was able to pick up on the ball early and apply pressure. He always hustled back, making opponents easy transition buckets rare.     Welch was an exciting player to watch in Grand Rapids. He was a versatile and athletic guard that can play on or off the ball effectively. Welch got downhill and didn't hold the ball too long or over dribble. He played the game fast and effectively. Welch was excellent at using the pass to create pace. He advanced the ball fast and efficiently with accurate down the floor passes.     Donaldson was very impressive at the showcase. He continuously made some very impressive and athletic plays. Donaldson had a pull up triple from the top and a behind the back open floor dish off for an assist. He flaunted some super fast handles and creative passing. Donaldson was even able to connect on a pretty little floater with touch. He got off the ground and rebounded high, allowing him to play bigger than his height.     Spencer had himself a day in Grand Rapids last weekend. He was an engaged defender that was willing and able to stifle the dribble drive with perimeter help. Spencer talked on D, communicating his way through screens. He was also impressive with the pass. Spencer saw the floor well and his passes were crisp. He was able to feed the post with a bounce pass that hit it's target.     Samaha is one of the most exciting freshman post players in the state. He has the strength, frame and game that doesn't come around every day. Samaha was willing and able to run the floor as a post and then set solid screens up top in a half court situation. He was an efficient scorer around the basket, catching feeds with strong hands and showing comfort and skill finishing over his right shoulder. Samaha was a constant threat on the offensive glass and routinely went over top of his opponents to snag boards. He also found lanes and converted on a cut-catch-score.     Powell made a statement about his game at the Sophomore ID Camp. I really like the energy and grit that he brought to the table at the event. Powell had a strong frame and he had the physical game to match it and utilize it. He worked hard off the ball, where he would regularly screen for the ball handler and roll off it with hand high ready for the pass. Powell played big by staying active around the glass.    #67: I apologize for the missing name, but there was no 67 on any of my sheets. I hope they identify themselves because they played A+ basketball last weekend. They had impressive length that they used to wall up on defense. They protected the rim and blocked shots while doing it. #67 could step outside and stretch the floor by connecting on jumpers from behind the arc. They also showed the ability to catch a feed on the block and score off of it.
