The 2024 Scholastic Period has returned to High School Basketball in the State of South Carolina. I was at Byrnes High School in Duncan, South Carolina on Wednesday for one of the month's first events. Eight of the State's Top Programs were off in attendance including two that made it to a State Championship Game in the 2023-24 Season. June is an exciting time because we often get to see multiple teams in one gym displaying returning veterans, developed talent, and new faces. Check out Part 1 of my Biggest Standouts from the Byrnes Summer Shootout:

[player_tooltip player_id='2417275' first='Jamari' last='Cullen'] had a terrific pair of performances for Byrnes to help them go 2-0 on their first play day of the month. He is an athletic slasher who saw his role increase as the season went on last year and should make the leap into the starting lineup this year. He checks a lot of boxes with his play on both ends including good jump-shooting, a solid handle, the ability to make plays off the dribble, foot quickness, shot-alteration, rebounding, and will even jump a passing lane to get out in transition. He filled up the box score in both games, going for 8 Points, 3 Steals, and 1 Block against Hillcrest and 16 Points and 7 Rebounds against Sumter.

Evan was one of the Top Overall Prospects in the gym Wednesday and had two strong games for the hosts. He didn't have his best shooting performance in Game 1 but battled in the paint and on the offensive glass, going for 10 Points and 4 Rebounds while getting an early rest. In Game 2, the perimeter shots started to fall at a more efficient rate connecting on 2 of his 3 attempts. Enos also had back-to-back assists early in the second matchup that were really impressive on dribble drives where he kept his head up, read the help defense, and kicked to open shooters.

Peden was terrific in the Spring with [program_tooltip program_id='2078724' first='Carolina' last='Pressure'] and picked up right where he left off with his High School Teammates on Wednesday. He is determined and usually effective at getting to his spots on the offensive end and will hit some tough mid-range jump shots. Breazeale also had some extremely strong downhill drives, getting to the free throw line twice early and also dumping off some nice passes to his big men. He moves around the court with good quickness and spring-like athleticism which are displayed with his defensive intensity. There are a lot of new faces with the Cavaliers, but you can count on the consistency and the familiar face of Breazeale in the backcourt this season.

Arcega-Whiteside was solid as usual for Dorman at the Byrnes Summer Shootout against Keenan HS. His ability to switch onto multiple positions was impressive today. Although it is not a new attribute, it is something that makes him stand out against other prospects with a similar body and play style in the state. He moved his feet well and used his strong frame to keep drivers out of the paint and force tough shots. Keenan also had some solid plays on the offensive end, particularly with some tough second-chance points over the Raiders' length.

Wesley is a prospect I have seen before but got to see more in his element today. He was great on both ends of the floor for the Gamecocks, playing more as a Stretch 5 due to their lack of a "true" big man. He was able to connect from the perimeter and make plays off the drive on the offensive end while rebounding and playing good defense on the other end. His rim protection, in particular, stood out, blocking 2 shots and steering many other driving attempts away from the basket.

I didn't get to see much more of Caughman Jr after watching him for the first time last June, but the Rising Freshman will see an increased role and maybe even a starting spot for the Raiders this fall. He has good size and length to affect the game from his wing position. Antoine has very sound jump shot mechanics and is confident making plays off the dribble. At times he was used as the primary on-ball defender of the opposing team's guard to get some size and disrupt the flow of the offense. [player_tooltip player_id='2433116' first='Antoine' last='Caughman Jr'] has a bright future and is a name to remember for the 2028 Class.
