For the most part, we decided the feedback we got from college coaches for the top players was still consistent from when we asked through to the end of the season, so no real changes were needed. Here’s a quick look at the Top Five:
2023-24 Stats: 21.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 4.9 apg
2023-24 Awards/Honors: 6A State First Team All-Tournament, PIL Player of the Year
Breakdown: Hill made the return back home to Oregon after a year away at Compass Prep in Arizona and it was as if he had never left. He settled right back into a leading role at Roosevelt and as one of the top players in the state, led the Roughriders all season long. The consensus pick as the #1 player in Oregon in terms of collegiate potential by the college coaches we surveyed, the point guard helped take Roosevelt to the state championship game and a runner-up finish.
2023-24 Stats: 28.7 ppg, 12.9 rpg, 3.4 bpg, 3.3 apg
2023-24 Awards/Honors: Gatorade Player of the Year, 3A State First Team All-Tournament, 3A Player of the Year
Breakdown: Maurer led the Challengers to their third-straight 3A championship but also proved himself against 5A and 6A schools in games at the Capitol City Classic and Les Schwab Invitational. The college coaches we polled felt the 7-footer had found a great fit at Grand Canyon, both on and off the basketball floor.
2023-24 Stats: 27.3 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 1.9 apg
2023-24 Awards/Honors: Oregon Sports Awards Player of the Year, Oregonian Player of the Year, 5A State First Team All-Tournament, Intermountain Conference Player of the Year
Breakdown: The odds-on favorite to repeat as 5A Player of the Year, Carmichael helped lead the Storm to their first-ever state championship. He also led 5A in scoring and ranked in the top five in rebounding and was a dominant force all-season long. The college coaches we polled all agreed that the Boise State signee figures to be an impact player in college from day one.
2023-24 Stats: 22.9 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 5.0 apg
2023-24 Awards/Honors: 6A State First Team All-Tournament, Three Rivers League Player of the Year
Breakdown: A legitimate contender for 6A Player of the Year honors, Steppe put the Timberwolves on his back this season and almost led the team to their third-straight state championship. An offensive threat at multiple levels, college coaches liked Steppe’s competitiveness and felt the Colorado State signee should fit in right into the way the Rams play.
2023-24 Stats: 15.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg
2023-24 Awards/Honors: 6A State First Team All-Tournament, Mt Hood Conference Player of the Year
Breakdown: Zeller ascended into the top five after an incredible past summer and more than lived up to billing during his senior campaign, one where he carried the load for a talented Rams team that eventually won the state title. The senior signed with Pepperdine in the fall but recently re-opened up his recruitment with the Waves recent dismissal of head coach Lorenzo Romar.
