If there was any “easy” pick that was made it was the Player of the Year, and, if any of you readers follow social media, it’s probably pretty cut and dry as to who it is. Below we break down the Prep Hoops SoCal Player of the Year and other four First-Team All-SoCal selections.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Trent Perry Trent Perry 6'4" | PG Harvard-Westlake | 2024 State #70 Nation CA-S | G | Harvard-Westlake
He probably won’t print this out and hang it on his wall the same way he will his McDonald’s All-American uniform, California Gatorade Player of the Year award or his CIF State Southern Section and State Open Division plaques, but Perry was the easy call for Player of the Year in Southern California. The USC-bound point guard led the Wolverines to a 33-3 record while playing a national schedule and a Mission League championship which is considered one of the toughest high school leagues in the country. Perry did all this while impacting every facet of the game as evidenced by his 18 point, six rebound and six assist averages on the year.
Mercy Miller Mercy Miller 6'4" | SG Notre Dame | 2024 State #45 Nation CA-S | G | Sr. | Sherman Oaks Notre Dame
Not only was Miller one of the premier scorers in the state but that sentiment crosses state lines for 3,000-plus miles because the 6-foot-3 combo guard was one of the best scorers in America this season. Per MaxPreps, Miller averaged 29.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game while leading the Knights to 31 wins and a Southern Section Division 1 title.
Brayden Burries Brayden Burries 6'4" | SF Roosevelt | 2025 State #13 Nation CA-S | G/F | Jr. | Eastvale Roosevelt
It seemed like Burries was on a mission to show what we all missed out on last year when he was ruled ineligible due to CIF transfer rules. The 6-foot-5 wing was one of the most physically and athletically dominating forces in the region in a season where he led Roosevelt to an appearance in the Section Open Division title game and SoCal State Regional where they fell both times to eventual champion Harvard-Westlake. In 35 games, the junior averaged 24.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.7 steals per game.
Brandon McCoy Brandon McCoy 6'4" | CG St. John Bosco | 2026 State CA-S | G | So. | St. John Bosco
McCoy was named a Co-Player of the Year in the Trinity League and led the Braves to a Section Open Division berth and a State Division I championship while averaging 18.6 points, eight rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. After being named among the top 2026 prospects in the country, McCoy accepted the heightened pressure and lived up to the hype which helped earn him a nod to the first team.
Tyrone Riley Tyrone Riley 6'5" | SF St. Pius X St. Matthias | 2024 State #152 Nation CA-S | F | St. Pius X-St. Matthias
It was a historic season for Pius and Riley was the main reason why the program was able to reach new heights. The 6-foot-7 wing led the Warriors their first-ever appearance in the Open Division, a 10-0 Del Rey League championship and a Tarkanian Classic Platinum Division title. The University of San Francisco-signee averaged better than 22 points and eight rebounds per game.
