It was one of the final stops in Nike’s EYBL Scholastic League Play, featuring some of the Top High School Teams and Players in the nation. These five prospects stood out as some of the top big men from the weekend. Subscribe to check them out!
Donnie truly had one of the most dominant performances I have seen in the entire High School Basketball Season. In his 35-point 16-rebound game against La Lumiere, he did everything you could ask for from a big man: control the glass, finish through contact, score off the dribble, hit a jump shot, switch onto guards, and protect the rim. The future Syracuse Orange put up a 24-point 10-rebound double-double in the second half alone with 7 of his 16 total rebounds coming on the offensive glass. La Lu truly had no answer for his persistence in the paint and Freeman was the key to a comfortable IMG win.
The Montverde Eagles claimed the 2024 EYBL Scholastic Regular Season Championship on Saturday and the performances of Asa Newell Asa Newell 6’8″ | PF Montverde Academy | 2024 State #29 Nation FL helped put the icing on the cake. There are not many teams in the country that have enough size to defend both Newell and Derik Queen Derik Queen 6’9″ | PF Montverde Academy | 2024 State #18 Nation FL , and the former was the beneficiary of that problem. He showed an ability to score efficiently facing up from the paint and from behind the arc. His jumper looks very fluid and was a big boost on the glass, pulling down 6 boards to go with his 20 points.
Copeland is the highest remaining unsigned Senior in the State of South Carolina, and put up a couple of good performances for the home team at the 2024 Pete Hollis Showcase. His strength in the paint was a handful for several matchups and he frequently had his way with his back to the basket. He also had a couple of goo- looking jump shots, something he’s always working to improve in his game. Terry was over double-digits in both games this weekend, but his best was a 17-point 3-block outing against AZ Compass Prep.
Deston has been one of Legacy ‘s most consistent players for the entire season. He has a knack for scoring off the dribble and does so with good size and a strong frame. He is at his best when he’s putting his head down and finishing around bodies as the basket. On the defensive end, he put his body on the line a couple of times drawing charges as well. His best performance this weekend came on Saturday Afternoon when he finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists against Wasatch Academy.
Nagy quietly put up a solid performance for Veritas Academy against La Lumiere in Friday’s first game. He is a terrific rebounder but also has the ability to score off the dribble and stretch the floor with perimeter jump shots. An interesting wrinkle within his game and the Veritas offense is using Nagy as a ball handler in big-on-big pick-and-roll actions with Pablo Soumare. Andrew was very good in those situations, which could be a good asset for him at the next level.
