Continue ReadingMcKowen continued his steadily fantastic play in a pair of viewings last week, averaging 16.5 points on 13-22 shooting, 2.5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.5 steals a game in a pair of wins over Iowa City West and Hudson. A tough, quick guard who can score from all three levels, McKowen has a tremendous understanding of the game and that IQ, when paired with his speed, toughness, athleticism, and talent, makes him one of the best 2025s in the state.
McCaffery got off to a bit of a slow start against Kennedy, but came on strong in the second half, showing the ability to create his own shot off the dribble or shoot it off the catch after good off-ball movement. A 6-8 wing who has really improved his handles and passing, McCaffery had 22 points on 8-12 shooting (5-8 3P, 1-1 FT), 5 rebounds, and 4 assists in the loss to the Cougars. His feathery stroke and improved playmaking at his size make him a national prospect.
Barrantes was a really good tertiary player for the Thunder last season, but the 6-9 forward has stepped into a starring role for GVC this season and been fantastic, and that great play continued on Thursday night against Grundy Center, going for 22 points on 9-17 shooting (2-6 3P, 2-2 FT), 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks. He’s a mobile big man with soft hands, and he has started to fill out in his upper body, allowing him to play with a bit more physicality. In addition to getting stronger, he’s showing more confidence in his jumper, taking six 3-pointers in the win, knocking down a pair of them with a quick release off the catch. He rotates well and is a good rim protector.
A 6-3/6-4 wing who showed impressive playmaking and court vision, Wallis had 11 points on 5-11 shooting (1-4 3P), 4 rebounds, and 6 assists in the Spartans’ narrow loss to Grand View Christian. He makes quick decisions with the ball in his hands and is always surveying the floor, looking for open teammates. He understands where his teammates are supposed to be and is good at making anticipatory passes, hitting them in stride or in the shooting pocket.
Driscoll has come off the bench for the Vikings the last few games, giving them a spark on both ends of the floor. A quick guard with a high IQ who is always under control, he was able to get to the rim for finishes, or to the mid-range area where he wanted to be, pretty much whenever he wanted to against Waverly-Shell Rock. He’s a dynamic weapon off the dribble who plays with pace, has a quick first step, and is a fantastic ball-handler who can navigate his way through tight spaces while keeping his dribble and his eyes on his teammates. He had 10 points on 5-6 shooting, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals against the Go-Hawks before fouling out.
Highlights
Frazell is a supremely confident guard who can get scorching hot and carry his team offensively for stretches with his ability to shoot it both off the dribble and the catch, as he’s seemingly within range as soon as he crosses halfcourt. He has a quick release, moves well without the ball in his hands, and uses the weapon of his jumper to open up his dribble penetration. He had 23 points on 6-9 shooting (3-6 3P, 8-11 FT), 3 rebounds, an assist, a steal, and a block in the loss to Decorah.
