Continue ReadingGlenn Farrello captured his 4th WCAC championship for PVI in a great game against Gonzaga. PVI won this game by 12, but the game was a lot closer than the final score. I also want to shout out Gonzaga’s student section, one of the best all year.
Derek Dixon Derek Dixon 6’4″ | SG Gonzaga | 2025 State #153 Nation MD had a rough night shooting in the Semi-final against DeMatha. He rectified that in the final and was Gonzaga’s most productive offensive player. Derek had an outstanding 3rd quarter, and he was a big reason Gonzaga was able to even the score with about 3 minutes left in the frame. Derek’s jump shot was falling all game, and he knocked down 3 threes. I’ve always loved the maturity in Derek’s game, and he showed out in a big spot despite the loss. He finished with 15 points.
Nyk Lewis was committed to attacking the rim against DeMatha in the semis, and he did well in that way in the final. Whenever I watch Nyk, he’s on the floor, hustling for a loose ball. Nyk got to the line and was very productive on the glass. Outside of a few questionable decisions that I’m sure Nyk would love to have back, He was great.
Former PVI Panther Christian Gurdak Christian Gurdak 6’9″ | C Gonzaga | 2025 State #156 Nation MD had an excellent showing in the final. Without Pat Ngongba, I felt like Gonzaga’s best path to victory would be Christian having a big game dominating with his size. Christian missed a couple of shots he usually makes around the rim, but he was a monster on the offensive glass, getting a couple of putbacks. Off of a few PVI doubles, Christian made some great passes. Christian finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Highlights
Jaquan Womack Jaquan Womack 6’7″ | PF Paul VI | 2025 State #284 Nation VA had a fantastic three games in the WCAC tourney. He scored double digits all 3 games and capped it off with a nice game against Gonzaga. On offense, Jaquan’s speed and finishing gave Christian Gurdak Christian Gurdak 6’9″ | C Gonzaga | 2025 State #156 Nation MD real trouble. He had a few nice offensive rebounds, and his energy was great, as always. He finished with 11 points.
Darren was the MVP of this game, and he hit some ridiculously tough shots. The WCAC Player of the Year opened the game with two threes and was great down the stretch. I would put Darren’s ability as a spot-up shooter and the quickness of his release against any high schooler in the country. Darren finished with 21 points and 6 rebounds.
After missing last year’s final with a hand injury, Jordan Smith Jordan Smith 6’1″ | PG Evergreen Christian | 2025 VA showed up in a big way. He was fantastic defensively and led them in rebounding with 8. He was efficient as always, and his late-game dunk ended the game if it wasn’t already over. He finished with 12 points and 2 blocks.
