(Note: this is not at all a definitive list, just part of an ongoing series to highlight some New York natives who are deserving of being recruited)
Asher Elson
Asher Elson
It’s been a big winter for Elson, who has seen his name take off at the turn of the new year. A 6-foot-10 big man who can really shoot it, Elson continues to improve seemingly each time he sets foot on the floor. The Brooklyn borough championship was a classic in which Elson took over down the stretch. While the Vikings ultimately fell short at the buzzer in the game, things are looking up for Elson in a real way. Expect him to be a priority name amongst power five schools this Spring and beyond.
Bailey is the ideal four man in today’s game. He can score around the rim, stretch the defense with his shooting, rebounds, and can put the ball on the floor at times. He’s tough and can play with other bigs if needed. He will suit up with the Riverside Hawks this Spring.
Harvin Guevara
Harvin Guevara
There aren’t many big men as skilled as Guevara, a 6-foot-10 forward with a silky shooting stroke and uncanny passing ability. He is a threat when he faces up in the hight post, often shooting over his man or picking out cutters. When he’s engaged he is quick and big enough that he can be an effective defender.
The LuHi combo-forward has missed some time with injury this season, but when he’s been on the floor he’s found ways to be productive. A tough and athletic forward with the ability to play and guard multiple positions, Jones is the kind of player who doesn’t need a play run for him to have an impact on a game. He has shown flashes as a shooter and is a very efficient slasher. In a time where motor and winning are becoming more valued “skills” than ever, Jones has both.
Ash joined Canterbury from upstate NY this season and re-classed back to 2025, both moves have paid off. A powerful finisher, Ash has also begun to improve his shooting ability as well. Playing on the EYBL circuit with the City Rocks should only further help him.
Abdou Tahirou
Abdou Tahirou
Tahirou popped in a big way at the Manhattan borough championship- hitting a couple of big threes and protecting the rim en route to the title. While it’s clear he’s still learning the game and growing, Tahirou runs the floor well, has some perimeter ability, and plays hard. It will be interesting to see how he develops in the coming months.
