I sat down with the man himself to discuss his high school season and future plans, for both the grassroots season and potential college plans.
Brown said that he and the Crusaders are successful because of the teams buy in to their roles. Everyone has a part to play, and when they just excel in those roles they are very successful. We see that from guys like Justin Caldwell Justin Caldwell 6'9" | PF Trinity Christian | 2026 State NC and Linwood Rowe Linwood Rowe 6'6" | SF Trinity Christian School | 2024 State NC , and Brown excels in his scoring, combo guard role. He told me the group plays hard, for each other, and for the entire game in their wins. However, a weakness for them is the ability to bring that toughness and heart for all 32 minutes against tougher teams, something Brown acknowledged they needed to work on before the state tournament came around.
Brown said he feels better in the lead guard spot compared to playing off the ball because he feels like he makes better decisions and plays with the ball in his hands compared to without it. He looks great when he’s given the opportunity to operate in space and coming off ball screens, hitting pocket passes and short rolls with precision. Also can shoot the ball well from outside when given room and of course capable of attacking downhill.
When it comes to the next level, Devaughn is very determined to find an opportunity, and Coach Freesman at Western Carolina has provided him an offer to do so. He shared that his visit was impressive, where he found that the complete team chemistry and how spacious the campus is were highlights. However, wherever gives the best opportunity to succeed on the basketball court is what is important to him, so future recruiting developments may push a new favorite to the front of the line.
After the high school season, Brown is looking to make a splash on the grassroots scene after playing for the Garner Road Select 2025 team with Ethan Reid Ethan Reid 6'3" | CG Southeast Raleigh | 2025 State NC and Marcel Freeman Marcel Freeman 6'0" | PG North Johnston | 2025 State NC , among others. He’s still unsure about his summer plans, but is hoping he can be invited to play with a shoe circuit team in order to gain more exposure and play against top level talent. He told me that Team CP3 and Team United were his top choices, as “they use their guards as more than just facilitators for the rest of the offense.”
Keep an eye on DeVaughn as he finishes up his junior season with Trinity Christian and gets ready to make a splash on the recruiting trail this summer.
