The region is filled with intelligent, well-coached, scrappy but skilled guards who can change the course of a game. Let’s delve into the six standout guards putting on a show this 2023-24 season.
Thomas Farrell Thomas Farrell 6'0" | SG Whitman | 2024 State MD – Walt Whitman (6’2)
Team record: 7-2 | Avg: 18.3 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.3 spg
Farrell is a sweet shooting scorer from Walt Whitman leading the charge with an impressive scoring average of 18.3 points per game, tops in the division. His all-around numbers exemplify his impact on the court, and his scoring output has been instrumental in Whitman’s 7-2 record. Farrell is surrounded by capable players like Hayden Walsh Hayden Walsh 6'0" | SG Whitman | 2025 State MD and Titan DeRosa, but he is the straw that stirs Whitman’s drink. He’s been on a tear all season long, shooting over 40% from three on a steady diet of pull-ups and spot ups in the half court.
Kyliek Howard – Parkville (6’0)
Team record: 7-2 | Avg: 11.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.1 apg, 2.3 spg
Despite being a sophomore, Kyliek Howard of Parkville stands a cut above even amongst elite guards. He’s a relentless attacker, and his tenacity on both ends of the court is evident from tipoff. Howard averages over 2 steals per game as the tip of the spear for a Parkville team that plays suffocating point-of-attack defense. Howard will only continue to grow offensively, for now, he has teammates better equipped to handle the bulk of those duties, leaving him to focus on secondary playmaking and tone setting.
Landon Windell Landon Windell 5'10" | PG Leonardtown | 2025 State MD – Leonardtown (5’10)
Team record: 5-2 | Avg: 15.7 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 4.7 apg, 1.6 spg
Landon Windell Landon Windell 5'10" | PG Leonardtown | 2025 State MD is an undersized junior PG from Leonardtown that combines scoring finesse with his playmaking prowess. His assists per game average is notable, but it doesn’t convey how much of an orchestrator Windell is for Leonardtown offensively. Alongside teammate Aaron Green, Windell serves as the fulcrum for a team averaging almost 70 ppg in their wins. His ability to stretch the floor is key at his size, and Windell makes up for it defensively by being in the right spot and using his quick hands to poke and prod. Players like Windell only get smarter as they get older so expect to see him repeating his stellar performance next year as well.
Sean Pyles – Urbana (6’0)
Team record: 4-5 | Avg: 11 ppg, 2 rpg, 2.8 apg, 0.9 spg
Despite Urbana’s 4-5 record, Sean Pyles continues to showcase his skills as a connector on the wing. Between Pyles and do-it-all all guard Christian Whitehead it was a tough choice as to who the better player has been for Urbana. the edge goes to Pyles because of his shooting, which adds another dimension to this interior-heavy Urbana offense. Pyles elevates the play of those around him, whether he’s in the right spot defensively, moving the ball and making the extra pass on offense — or knocking down much-needed jumpers as their key shooter.
Collin Farmer Collin Farmer 6'0" | PG North Point | 2024 MD – North Point (6’0)
Team record: 3-5 | Avg: 20.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.0 apg, 2.8 spg
Collin Farmer Collin Farmer 6'0" | PG North Point | 2024 MD is an offensive powerhouse from North Point able to shut down your best player defensively or rain on him offensively. Two-way players aren’t rare in Maryland basketball, but Farmer stands out with his impressive scoring package and doggedness on defense. You’d think with the load placed on him by North Point’s lack of size he’d tire but his motor may be as impressive as his skill set. Farmer is a next-level player who will likely look better with a deeper supporting cast around him. I have no trouble seeing him translate at the D2 level and could see him as a low-mid major player with a full season showcasing his improved jumper.
Korey Trone Korey Trone 6'0" | PG Seneca Valley | 2024 State MD – SVHS (6’0)
Team record: 2-6 | Avg: 9.6 ppg, 3.6 apg, 2.8 rpg, 2.6 spg
If you like old-school playmakers let me introduce you to Korey Trone Korey Trone 6'0" | PG Seneca Valley | 2024 State MD of SVHS. Trone puts the lead in lead guard with a tone-setting dominance of the ball reminiscent of Maryland guard Jahmir Young. He’s going to get into the paint, the decision is whether you stop him from scoring or finding a teammate. Trone excels in one one-on-one situations defensively, despite the lack of overall talent around him, he consistently shined whenever he plays. The jump shot must improve for him to have real impact on the next level but all the tools are there for a player who has improved each year as a PG.
As the season unfolds, keep your eyes on these dynamic players, as they’ll undoubtedly have more electrifying performances from week to week.
