Read along for 5 guys who helped their teams to victories this week and looked like big time basketball players in the private school ranks.
Newman averaged 25.5 PPG in two games last week, including a 31 point outburst against Southlake Christian on Friday. Also put up 10 combined assists, his playmaking abilities were evident as he quickly knifed through defenders and hit his teammates on dump offs and fling passes. Also showed off his tremendous scoring ability as he knocked down shots from all levels, and really showed off his ability to get deflation in the paint.
McKoy continues to excel as a physical slasher and defender, dropping 25 in their win over Kerr-Vance Academy. He continues to be unstoppable when he has a head of steam around the basket and free lanes to the rim. He’s a great athlete both with quickness and verticality which makes him a force on the defensive end as well. He’s averaging over 20 PPG on the year and should be a priority for college coaches.
Highlights
Shaw continues to knock down shots from the perimeter and lead his team to victories, averaging 25 PPG as Northside Christian went 2-0 on the week. He’s a great shot maker and taker, with parking lot range and an ability to shoot it on the catch or on the move. His frame is good at his height, but he’ll need to put on some weight at the college level. He should still be a priority for D2 coaches over the next few months.
Wiggins led balanced efforts for Weslayan Christian last week as they scored two victories over Charlotte Country Day and Greensboro Day. He had 19 in the win over the Bengals, and was the leading scorer in the victory over the Bucs. He’s a physical wing who has always been driving the ball well, but has developed a perimeter jumper this season that looks solid and is going in at a high clip. He could be a target for D1 coaches this year and next.
Vazquez dropped 22 in a huge win over Fayetteville Academy last week, including the game winning bucket. WCDS was 3-0 on the week, with him playing a huge part. He’s a physical wing who has a college level frame already at 6’5 210. He really knows how to get to the rim with his physicality and ability to change speeds and directions easily. He’s one of the best 2024s in ENC and proved it last week.
