College coaches and scouts filled the gym as a number of prospects showed out on the big stage. We saw some great battles between Cherokee County and Gwinnett County, also some intriguing non-GHSA matchups. These are a couple of top performers from the night games.
Central Gwinnett utilized their multitude of weapons in a convincing 72-52 win over Cherokee. Tim Smith carried the scoring load through all 4 quarters and finished with a game-high 22 points. He uses his long 6’4 frame well to fend off defenders and finish at the rim. Central Gwinnett has been a different team since Smith returned, his leadership and scoring ability both proving to be vital. Smith is currently committed to Voorhees and their head coach was in attendance on Saturday.
Tahai Morgan Tahai Morgan 6’0″ | CG Lanier | 2024 State GA led Lanier into the Sewer Classic and put on a show from start to finish. Morgan finished with 17 points while showing off the explosiveness, shooting ability, and twitchy handle. He was extremely efficient on Saturday, taking advantage of scoring opportunities when they presented themselves but more so working to get great looks for his teammates. Morgan holds offers from Piedmont and Brevard and remains one of Georgia’s best available point guards.
Brandon Lanier Brandon Lanier 6’7″ | PF Lanier | 2025 State GA is having a breakout season for Lanier and Saturday may have been his most impressive performance. The 6’7 forward dominated the paint on his way to a double-double, 18 points and 11 rebounds. Lanier plays the game with a lot of emotion and that translated into a tenacity on the glass. He makes for a great complementary big alongside some talented guards and should see his stock rise throughout the season.
Jackson Houston Jackson Houston 6’4″ | SF Buford | 2024 State GA came out of the gates on fire and led Buford to 64-63 win in the primetime game. He finished with 19 points including 9 in the 1st quarter to start things off. Houston is one of the more versatile wings in the state and we saw a little bit of everything from him on Saturday. His bounce may catch you off guard, able to compete with bigs inside and finish above the rim. Meanwhile, he can play on the perimeter and knock down open threes. Currently holds offers from Brevard and Bryan.
Etowah gave Buford a serious run for their money in the 7:30 game and while they couldn’t get it done in the end, Angelakos hit some big shots down the stretch to give Etowah a chance. We’ve seen Angelakos slide into more of a leadership role as a senior and it’s clear that they want the ball in his hands down the stretch. Angelakos is one of the most lethal sharpshooters in the state, deep range and the ability to hit shots with little space. He’ll be key for Etowah this year.
