Continue ReadingPrep Hoops was in attendance for two of the biggest events in the state this past weekend: The Bash at Ridge View High School on Friday, December 8th, and the Coaches Classic at Spartanburg High School on Saturday, December 9th. Take a look at some of the biggest standouts from the two events:
The Bash
The Legacy Early College Lions feature a number of new faces to the State of South Carolina. One of those is Deston Christian Deston Christian 6’6″ | SF Legacy Early College | 2024 State SC . He had a terrific game against Canyon International Academy on Friday at The Bash, finishing with 18 points and 7 rebounds – 5 of those being on the offensive glass – in Legacy’s 84-74 victory. Deston has a strong frame but is more than capable of taking his defender off the dribble, which resulted in most of his success scoring the ball. Christian also has a very smooth jump shot and is adept at getting to his spots in the mid-range, proving so by shooting 8-13 from the field and 1-1 from behind the arc in the win.
Bryson has quickly made a name for himself in the EYBL Scholastic as a premier shooter. He knocked down six threes in Legacy’s victory over Canyon International on Friday evening. Most of his success was as a spot-up shooter, but he also knocked down a couple off the dribble. His only non-three of the night was a mid-range jump shot that he knocked down after attacking a closeout. Travelle is also a good athlete, solid defender, and can help out on the defensive glass. He had 20 points and 5 rebounds in the Lions Day 2 win.
The Bash’s host school got big performances from two players. Pretty, who might have been the biggest winner in terms of stock this week, put the state on notice with his play. He had 21 points and 9 rebounds on 9-12 shooting from the field and 2-3 shooting from behind the arc against EYBL Scholastic Sunrise Christian. Despite being outsized by many of the defenders assigned to him, none of them outworked Jayden. He frequently scored off the dribble while finishing around multiple bodies, but he also consistently knocked down the perimeter shot to add spacing to the Blazer offense. And, when it mattered most, Pretty stepped up and made big shots down the stretch to help seal the victory for Ridge View.
Corbett is the other Blazer who had a huge night on Friday at The Bash. He scored all 19 of his points in the second half of Ridge View’s win over Sunrise Christian, standing out against future Division One players. Corbett took over for several different periods down the stretch, and the defense had no answer for his constant slashing and shot creation. Korie is a very strong driver who is capable of finishing around taller defenders or pulling up in the mid-range. Corbett also had an impact in other areas too, adding 7 rebounds and 2 steals.
Coaches Classic
I got the chance to see Dorman earlier this season in the Impact Sports Invitational Championship Game, but Andrews was held out due to an injury. It was just a minor injury and Christian returned shortly after, but this was still my first chance to see him in a Cavalier uniform this season. He did not disappoint. Andrews is one of the top scoring guards in the state and he did just that in Dorman’s victory over Riverside at the Coaches Classic. He finished with a game-high 19 points, but also added 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Christian excelled with the ball in his hands in transition, showing lots of creativity with his finishes around the rim. Andrews dominated the 2nd and 3rd quarters, earning himself some extra rest in the 4th as the Cavaliers won comfortably.
The addition of Mikey Williams Jr Mikey Williams Jr 5’11” | PG Greer | 2026 State SC to an already talented Greer roster is a major reason why the Yellow Jackets are undefeated so far this season. There are not many defenders in the state that can keep Williams in front in transition or in half-court sets. He is also a good shooter and knocked down one three in particular from deep range. Williams put up 20 points and 3 assists on Saturday in Greer’s win over Powdersville.
Durrah is another Yellow Jacket who stepped up at the Coaches Classic. He had a very active first quarter with 6 points. He excelled at tracking down the ball on both the offensive and defensive glass, protecting the rim, and finishing through contact. Bradyn finished 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks in Greer’s victory.
Terry Cunningam
Terry Cunningam
Cunningham is a new name to the database. He is an excellent shooter who is also capable of making plays for himself and others off the dribble. Terry has a great connection with Point Guard DJ Martin DJ Martin 5’10” | PG Fountain Inn | 2025 State SC and the two always seem to be on the same page offensively. On the defensive end, Cunningham has good athleticism and moves his feet very well on the perimeter. In Fountain Inn’s win over Spartanburg on Saturday, Terry showed out with 14 points on 3-5 3-point field goal shooting.
