The strong 6-foot-5 forward from Lake Oswego showed exactly why at the Capitol City Classic this past week in Salem. While he was dominant the entire event, you only needed to see his performance against Cascade Christian to see what Sutherland brings to the table – and while he was a huge part of helping hold star Austin Maurer Austin Maurer 7'0" | C Cascade Christian | 2024 State #209 Nation OR under check in a big win for the Lakers, he was quick to acknowledge he didn’t do things alone.
“First off, he is the hardest guy I’ve ever had to guard in my life, and that was not me guarding him alone – I mean, that was our practice plan and that was our coach putting in the practice plan, and that’s my teammate helping me execute,” Sutherland said. “Guarding a talent like him is a full team effort. We completely fronted him and had a guy in the backside no matter what. And then, honestly, you can have all these strategies, but you just got to bring the dog, right? Give it all you got.”
Defense wasn’t the only way Sutherland contributed as he also notched a career-high 34 points in the game. He utilized his strength and athleticism for a number of finishes around the hoop as he usually does, but he also stepped outside and knocked down some jumpers and was also able to create off the dribble not only for himself but for others as well.
“I’m maturing as an offensive player,” Sutherland said. “I’m confident in my abilities and when I stay in the game for the whole game and stay out of foul trouble, gradually scoring points, that’s something I can do and know I can do. It helps the team clearly.”
Sutherland is hopeful the performance – and other performances so far this season – will increase his college recruitment. He played AAU basketball with Oregon Prospects this past spring and summer, which went well, and this fall made unofficial visits to Seattle Pacific and Whitworth. While he indicated things have been relatively quiet as of late, more big performances should heat things back up and he described what he’s looking for in a program.
“I want to go play at a high level and try to get school paid for, which would be nice,” Sutherland said. “But I just want to go somewhere where I can keep the same love that I have for Lake Oswego – a four-year school, join the community, and be happy. I want to compete, though. I want to go to the best I can do.”
Lake Oswego got their first two wins of the season at the Capitol City Classic and Sutherland feels more good things are yet to come. “We’re coming along, man,” Sutherland said. “It’s a new era. We’ve had to figure some stuff out, but we’re putting the pieces together and I think we’re going to look scary very soon. We want to win and we’re taking this to league. I want to win the state championship. People are sleeping on us, but we know what we can do for sure.”
Sutherland currently ranks as the #42 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2024 rankings, which will be updated in the near future.
