In the independent school ranks, we picked out five guys who are deserving of recognition for their performances this week. Read below for more details.
His buzzer-beater on Saturday helped NRCA take home a win at the Hoop State Hoopsgiving tournament, but the big combo guard who’s only a freshman impressed in more ways than one this week. He got hot in the second half of the game Saturday, taking over and scoring 13 of his 17 in the last 16 minutes. He’s a variety scorer, both getting to the rim and hitting jumpers, but has mature strength and size for him being a freshman. Really solid defensively with a lot of room to grow on that end as well.

Johnson had a strong weekend at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge with Providence Day as they went 2-0 on the weekend. His first double double of the year came on Friday against Mallard Creek, followed by leading his team with 14 points in a win over Charlotte Catholic. He’s had a strong start to the season as a mobile forward who attacks the rim hard and rebounds with intensity. He’s got room to grow as a perimeter player and working away from the basket, but he impacts the game already with his strengths.
Highlights
DeShawn Coulter
DeShawn Coulter
With most of Gaston Day’s rotation departed from a season ago, it’s been interesting to see who would step up for the Spartans. That man looks to be Coulter, as he’s really come on strong to start the year. He’s a multifaceted threat we need to get more eyes on as the Spartans have started 6-3. He can create for teammates, score off the bounce, and step out and knock down jumpers when left open. It will be interesting to see him get more state-wide attention over the course of the year.
Benham had two good games this week as his squad went 1-1, dropping a tough game to title contenders Christ School. He’s overcome a slow start to the season as he fired in 4 threes a game over the past three contests. He’s got a flamethrower and really knows how to get to his spots without the ball in his hands. Solid playmaker as someone who doesn’t play on the ball as well. Should soon be a target for regional D2/D3 schools looking for a shooter to add to their ranks.
King is fresh off a commitment to Presbyterian College, but has not slowed his performances down. He had 28 to lead all scorers in a pre-Thanksgiving win over Mallard Creek, and 17 points and 6 boards in a big time victory over Greenfield. He’s a physical finisher around the rim that has some vertical bounce too. He’s a nightmare to match up on because of his positional size and physicality/strength. Getting better as a shooter too.
