About Winkel: Winkel enjoyed a breakout junior year for the Jaguars, firmly establishing himself as one of the best scoring guards in the state after putting up great numbers against one of the most difficult schedules in the state. He’s at his best when he’s playing downhill and using his combination of ball-handling, quickness, and toughness to get to the rim, but he’s a good enough shooter that it needs to be respected as well. In addition to his scoring prowess, he also thrives as a playmaker for his teammates, dishing out nearly five assists a game last season. He followed up that great junior year with a fantastic summer playing with a Kingdom Hoops EYCL team that experienced immense success. He currently holds a handful of Division II offers.
Why he can win Mr. Basketball: Winkel showed throughout last season that he can put up great numbers against some of the state’s best competition, and helped lead Centennial to the state tournament. If the Jags are able to make a return trip, it will be because Winkel was dominant, and that will get some attention.
