SWFL is loaded with talent this year and I will be splitting up these prospects into 4 select groups; post players, guards, shooters, and wings. Let’s get right at and take a look at 5 post players who will be making some noise for their teams in 2023-24.
The 6’8″ big man averaged a double-double for Gateway Charter last year as a sophomore. Johnson has great size, with a strong, athletic frame and is a presence down low on both ends of the court. He is a great shot-blocker and excellent rebounder with how quick he gets off the floor. He’s a shot-altering big who makes it difficult to score in the paint, but isn’t afraid to guard around the perimeter either. Offensively, he runs the floor well and likes to attack and play above the rim. Johnson will be a key piece in the Griffin’s success throughout this 2023-24 season.
Taylor is a tremendous 2-way player who runs the floor and plays great in transition. He’s very effective attacking and finishing at the rim and has a solid mid-range game, to go with his much improved free-throw shooting. The 6’7″ forward is smart player who has a knack for finding the open spots on the floor. He rebounds the ball extremely well on both ends of the court, and his athleticism allows him to guard just about any position. Taylor looks to be a key contributor for Charlotte and their success this upcoming season.
Fritz Odige
Fritz Odige
Odige is a big, strong kid who plays with a high motor and does whatever his team asks of him. He uses his body well on each side of the ball, creating space for both himself and his teammates. He’s an above-average rebounder who looks to score off the glass and play big in the post. The 6’7″ forward is a solid defender who’s a mainstay in the middle where he can alter and block shots. Odige gives his Lehigh team a presence in the paint to go with their quick, scrappy style. Keep an eye on this prospect in 2023-24 as he continues to learn and develop his game.
The transfer from Canterbury gives his new Bishop Verot squad some much needed size. Ashley is a long, athletic prospect with a great wingspan, making him a true rim protector. He’s a 2-way player who is a great rebounder on both ends of the floor. For a guy his size he has solid handles, where he can create his own shot, but he’s not afraid to shoot from the perimeter either. Ashley will be a major contributor both offensively and defensively for the Vikings this year, continue to monitor this prospect as he settles into his new home.
Highlights
Gabe Markhart
Gabe Markhart
I watched Markhart over the fall and was very impressed with his overall play. He’s a skilled big man with great knowledge of the game, who’s an excellent compliment to the Cougar’s strong guard play. He positions himself well on the court and is very effective in the pick ‘n roll. He can score at the rim but also has a soft touch from the outside. Markhart gives Barren Collier some size inside and is an above-average rebounder who can help clog the middle. Keep an eye him as he continues to get stronger and develop his game.
