Many teams are still finding their footing as a unit before the actual regular season begins, but some teams are looking like they already have it together. Let’s take a look at some stars who shone bright this Saturday.
Nick Anderson
Nick Anderson
Nick put on a defensive clinic in his team’s afternoon game, getting multiple steals on defense and coming down with several rebounds in the paint. Anderson plays with high energy nonstop the entire game and is a great motivational leader for his squad. Coaches can love the constant and physical style of defense that Nick plays as he can be considered a strong glue guy for any team he plays on. Anderson also showed the ability to get to the rim past the defense constantly and finish the layup for an easy two points, often times through contact.
Not enough can be said about Jordan’s leadership for this South Houston team. This kid does everything right on both ends of the court and is a constant source of positive energy. He fits the “true point guard” role for this team so well and can change the course of momentum in a contest in the blink of an eye. Buckner is lethal shooting off the dribble and always knows where his teammates are on the court, setting up for several open buckets on the offensive end. Jordan led the charge for SH in an impressive win over Houston Christian that many fans would easily consider the primetime game of this tournament. He helped slow down Montana Wheeler Montana Wheeler 5’9″ | PG Houston Christian | 2025 State #126 Nation TX enough this game and was a constant source of energy. I see great things coming for Buckner in the near future and this kid should definitely be considered as more than a scorer, he does all the right things whenever he is on the court.
Josh Larry
Josh Larry
The way Josh was playing this contest can only be described as a masterful showcase on the defensive side of the court. With matchups like Chris Adlam and Montana Wheeler Montana Wheeler 5’9″ | PG Houston Christian | 2025 State #126 Nation TX , Larry had his hands full but put his nose to the grindstone and just kept working hard, getting multiple stops, and leading to several transition buckets. Josh also showed he can isolate his matchup on offense and use the pick and roll to either get to the rim uncontested or make a great pass to his post man for an easy two points. Larry also hit a couple step back three pointers off the dribble and demonstrated his ability to get a bucket when his team needed points. Josh was easily one of the more underrated players on the court this weekend and I look for him to continue this impressive momentum moving forward.
Josh displays tremendous athleticism on the offensive side of the ball and uses his long wingspan well to get past opponents for easy buckets. Goodwin is also quite the efficient scorer for the Mustangs and sets up teammates well for open looks at the basket. He was an effective part of the full court press for Cy Ranch this game and got several steals for easy and one finishes through contact. Goodwin will play a major role in the Cy Ranch offense this year as the main ballhandler, but he can also play off the ball and create offense through off ball screens and cuts to the basket.
Royce Shelton Royce Shelton 6'0" | PG Cypress Park | 2027 State TX
Royce Shelton Royce Shelton 6'0" | PG Cypress Park | 2027 State TX
Royce displayed a great facilitating and playmaking ability off the bench for Cy Park in their game against FBCA on Saturday. Shelton has great awareness on the offensive end and is always knowing what spots his teammates are in for an easy basket. Royce hit several catch and shoot jumpers from long range and showcased his ballhandling beating his matchup to the bucket and scoring the rock. One of the more underrated 2027 players in the city of Houston, Royce plays with extreme precision and accuracy on the offensive end of the ball and does all the extra things coaches want to see on defense, such as hustling for loose balls and playing up on the press.
