There is a segment of Indiana High School Basketball purists that simply will never approve of kids and their families seeking different opportunities. While recruiting and influencing high school student-athletes to change schools for basketball-specific reasons is thought of as “not good” by a consensus of fans, there are always unique circumstances to each transfer that most will never know. More times than not, there are not the nefarious reasons behind a transfer that many people seem to want to believe. Sometimes it truly can be as simply as a family moving to a new place. In Indiana, with open enrollment, that also means that when entering a new area student-athletes have the right to choose the situation they deem to be the best fit. There are enough basketball powerhouses in every major metropolitan area that “recruiting” in the traditional sense doesn’t even come into play. The schools and programs simply recruit themselves based on the banners on the wall and the alumni playing in college and beyond. With all that being said, let’s take a look at some of the top transfers throughout the state of Indiana entering the 2023-2024 high school basketball season. Let’s take a look at the greater South Bend and Region area.
Garza is a talented, skilled, face-up forward that put together a strong summer with 94 Feet Elite. The 6’5″ lefty will play his senior season at Bosco Institute after suing up for Hammond Central last season. His ability to stretch the floor out to three-point range, score around the basket with crafty footwork, and good positional rebounding has led to him being a solid small college recruit. Currently holds an offer from Kentucky Christian.
Strength and physicality are two of this prospects best attributes. Moore finishes very well around the basket, rebounds at a high level, and has flashed the ability to drive it at opposing 4’s and 5’s creating a bit of a matchup issue for defenses. He had a good grassroots season for Anchor Basketball Academy . As a senior, Moore will play for Bishop Noll after leaving Hammond Central High School.
One of our favorite under-the-radar guards here at Prep Hoops Indiana, this 6’3″ scorer is moving from Hammond Central High School to Bosco Institute for his senior season. King has good positional size, is an excellent scorer from the perimeter, and has the athleticism to get up and finish at the rim. His shooting ability, both from mid-range and beyond the arc, puts a lot of pressure on the defense. Look for him to continue to emerge as a small college guard prospect this winter.
After leading the undefeated Penn freshman team in scoring last season, Packer made the move over to South Bend Riley High School for his sophomore season. The 6’3″ guard is a knockdown three-point shooter which he put on display recently at Session I of the Prep Hoops Indiana Top 250 Expo. Packer’s ability to stretch the floor will help him step into a role right away this winter at his new destination. High-upside perimeter prospect in the Class of 2026.
Highlights
If the name sounds familiar, it is because his father landed the Notre Dame head coaching job this off-season and thereby moved his family from State College, Pennsylvania to South Bend, Indiana. Shrewsberry will be a sophomore at South Bend St. Joseph High School and immediately became one of the better prospects in the Class of 2026 in-state. He is a good shooter from the perimeter when his feet are set, handles the ball very well, and is active on the defensive end of the floor with his length. Look for him to step into a major role right away for SBSJ this season.
