Continue ReadingHigh school basketball in El Paso, TX, is just around the corner, with the respective school districts starting in early November. This season, there are a lot of up-and-coming Big men who are due for a breakout season. For note, a player described as a “Big” broadly means they can play multiple positions as a power forward or center. Here are four of the best Bigs in El Paso heading into the 2023-24 season.
Standing at 6’9”, making him one of the tallest high school basketball players in El Paso, Jayden Leverett Jayden Leverett 6’10” | C El Paso Chapin | 2025 State TX is hard to miss. Over the summer, the Chapin center received his first Division I offer from South Alabama of the Sun Belt conference. And rightfully so; as a sophomore last season, he was a massive presence in the paint on a stacked Huskies roster. With the departure of five seniors, Leverett has a chance to put his name amongst the best players in El Paso. He will undoubtedly carry a larger load offensively now as a rising junior, and his defensive impact is a given at this point. With two years left of high school ball ahead of him, South Alabama won’t be the only Division I program calling.
Highlights

Peyton Parker
Peyton Parker
To no surprise, another Chapin Huskie in Peyton Parker makes the list. Like his interior counterpart Jayden Leverett Jayden Leverett 6’10” | C El Paso Chapin | 2025 State TX , the rising senior has an opportunity to stand out this season, with Chapin experiencing some significant roster turnover. On the offensive end, Parker is a great floor spacing four. You can find him walking into threes at the top of the key, but he has range well beyond the 3-point line. And at 6’5”, it’s hard for defenders to contest legitimately. Unsurprisingly, he’s a threatening rim protector on the defensive end. He possesses quick foot speed and can chase down defenders in transition or in the half-court as a weak side helper.

Aiden Marquez
Aiden Marquez
Although he has the speed and agility to play out on the perimeter with other athletic wings, Aiden Marquez is your prototypical Big. Furthermore, he’s great at making his presence known in the paint. The rising senior can crash the offensive glass, effectively seal defenders in the low post, and swat any attempts below the free-throw line. Again, because of his speed, he’s a more than capable zone defender with his length and ability to cover space at 6’3”. Marquez was the best player on a Trail Blazers team that won 22 games last season, so it should be no surprise if the talented big leads Americas to a deep district run in 2023-24.

Cesar Lujan
Cesar Lujan
With El Dorado High losing their leading scorer last season, Cesar Lujan has an opportunity to breakout for the Aztecs in his senior year. For a Big, Lujuan has great agility and athleticism. He’s able to play the passing lanes, get out on the fast break, and can impact the game defensively by more than just rebounding and rim-protecting. Going forward, Lujuan will be amongst the team leaders in points, rebounds, blocks, and possibly in his district.
