The lean 6-foot-5 wing from Oregon City had the right combination of size and shooting ability that college coaches love – the question was what level he might reach. The senior lefty hoped to find out this club season playing with the Oregon Prospects and now that the dust has settled, he’s starting to look over all the options.
“Prospects was really great and the coaches were amazing – just having those community college coaches with all those ties was really nice,” Westermeyer said. ” And the players were also amazing. They were really great players and it was just overall really good experience. We played in some tough tournaments against some tough competition.”
During club ball and on his own, Westermeyer worked on expanding his game. “I’ve just been trying to work on my handle and my finishing,” Westermeyer said. “Just adding another dimension to my game and be more than just a shooter.”
College coaches have seen the improvement in Westermeyer’s game, both on the club circuit and at the number of elite camps the senior attended this summer and fall. From the Northwest Conference, he’s picked up roster spot offers from Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound and has been actively talking to George Fox, Willamette, and Linfield. He’s made a trip to see MacAlester College in Minnesota and Western Oregon has also been in contact as well.
“I’m just trying to expose myself,” Westermeyer said. “I have some good D-III looks and I’ve started talking a little bit to D-II coaches. Right now I’m kind of waiting to commit. I’m Just going to play it by ear and see how things go.”
Westermeyer noted that he enjoyed the trip to see MacAlester and that distance away from home will be something he has to consider when it comes to choosing the right school. He broke down some of the other things he’ll be sorting through.
“I’m looking for really good academics – I want to study biology and I’m not going to play basketball for the rest of my life, so academics comes first,” Westermeyer said. “But other than that, I’m just looking for a good community, a good team where I can contribute pretty early. I just want to have a good sense of community on the team and the guys.”
Senior season awaits for Westermeyer and the Pioneers and there’s no question he’s excited. “I think we have potential to do something really big here and go pretty far in the state tournament,” Westermeyer said. “We have a lot of returners and a lot of new guys who can contribute really early. I’m expecting to do a lot of big things with this team. I’ve gotten a lot better, more dimensional, so I expect to score more but also be like a leader on my team and help my team be successful.”
Westermeyer currently ranks as the #26 player in the recently updated PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2024 rankings.
