Continue ReadingThis weekend we got to see some of the top prep schools in the south region go head to head and it didn’t disappoint. So many talented kids in the building but here are few that stood out in to many categories to count. I do want to note that I didn’t get a chance to catch a couple squads so I may have missed some prospects.
6’5 2024 Leon Horner has been making waves all summer ever since his transfer to Jermaine O’Neal’s Dynamic Prep. Already a talented group, the addition of Leon certified them as a powerhouse for sure. Leon brings way to much to the table to measure on paper and had a good weekend against some tough competition. Versatility is the first word that comes to mind, their aren’t to many prospects like him that can you can slide on the court in any D1 program and get production without interrupting the flow. Leon can operate the 2-4 well on ball or off ball his game won’t be effected much. This weekend specially he showed a bunch of grit when he his team needed it the most or went cold. He’s a slasher that can use his power or switch to finesse moves to finish. He finishes well too I can’t really remember more then a time or 2 he got to the rim and didn’t score the bucket or get fouled. He’s also been knocking down a good percentage of 3 balls and mid ranges lately which is catching attention of some scouts who previously were wondering if he could shoot and how good. His frame is big and strong and often gives defenders trouble on a physicality scale when moving towards the basket. This also translates to the defense end where he caused several turnovers and blocks a shot or 2 a game off being so solid alone. He also has quick hands and will jump a pass, once he gets out in transition, just forget about it. Leon was one of my top overall prospects this year and I’m looking forward to seeing his stock rise against some tough national competition on the Dynamic Prep schedule this winter.
6’3 Jaylan Lawal was my top rated guard from the event. He didn’t just put on a show, he is the show. His summer on the eybl circuit has obviously paid off. Jaylan’s frame already looks like a pro and he delivered some heavy blows to anyone attempting to get in his way at the basket. Everything about his game was fully controlled, he was able to use his bigs to knock down multiple shots from the arc or attack the basket. He was also willing to make the extra pass if the defense crashed on him. Defensively was active using his strong frame bump and frustrate smaller guards. He also provides a extra rebounder which is always a big plus for coaches at the next level. Jaylen has bright future, make sure he’s on your radar his stock rising has potential to land him at a power 5.
Isaiah Stewart Isaiah Stewart 6'6" | SF BigTyme Sports Preparatory Academy | 2025 State #250 Nation TX
6’6 Isaiah Stewart Isaiah Stewart 6’6″ | SF BigTyme Sports Preparatory Academy | 2025 State #250 Nation TX was a huge stock riser this weekend putting up some big performances with ease. At 6’6 he is a pure guard leading with his passing and shooting. He drops Chris Paul like dimes and takes pride in the assist category which is something we don’t see very often anymore. He also caught heat several times from the arc lighting it up for 5 triples the first game. Defensively gets after it and likes to trap smaller guards and force turnovers. Isaiah’s skill set at his height is rare and he’s obviously a D1 lock, i’ll go as far as saying he’s also in the category of super underrated 2025’s. He’ll be leading the way offensively for a new look Big Tyme prep program that nearly beat Dynamic Prep in last years Texas prep championship.
6’3 2025 Ja’Cobe Coleman Ja’Cobe Coleman 6’3″ | CG Pace Academy | 2025 State #224 Nation TX is slowly becoming big time. Always impressive, he lead his team this week against some TOUGH competition and didn’t miss a beep. His IQ is notable, he always knows when to speed the game up or keep it at slow pace. His first step is one of the best in the state for sure, once he’s by you he really locks in on the basket and finished a high percentage of his layups even the tougher ones. He’s hard to guard because once you figure that part out he will pull up for the midrange if you over pursue. He made his presence known in a back and forth game with one of the state’s top EYBL guards at Lewisville iSchool and every time he has the ball I just get a feeling like something good is going to happen. Ja’cobe was also active on defense forcing a bunch of turnovers that lead his team to transition baskets. Athletically he just has it, super bouncy and can change directions on the dime. He performed well this weekend when it mattered and I’m excited to see his growth this year at first year prep Pace Academy.
2024 guard TJ Burch TJ Burch 6’1″ | PG Texas Alliance Of Christian Athletes (TACA) | 2024 State TX is dynamic. I found myself losing track of the game in front me while watching him operate on the next court. I’ve stated before and still stand on TJ being the most underrated 2024 guard in the state. His impact with the ball in his hands is very “Kyrie Irvinish” leaving you with a “how did he do that?” type of feel when watching some of his offense plays. Tj didn’t necessarily dominate both games offensively but instead played more of a true point guard roll which is good for him heading towards college ball. Keep in mind that even in a light offensive game he is till going for 15-20 easily. Yes, he’s that good scoring the ball, 30 point games seem to be his normal no matter who the opponent is. He’s crafty with ball and uses his start and stop abilities to get the shot he wants. He’s a high percentage 3 point shooter but can slash also either attempting to dunk on you or giving you a highlight lay up. Midrange is there, tough defender on the perimeter, there’s not really much that missed when it comes to his game. He easily should be with some of the names talked about nationally in the 2024 class and I’m hoping this year will cement that thought for the rankings committee with him in full control of Taca Storm’s offensive. TJ just committed to McNeese University and should be on anyone’s radar who claims to know about high school basketball.
Jamarian Hall
Jamarian Hall
2024 Jamarian Hall was a fresh face for me and caught my eye at 6’3 with the athleticism and wingspan he displayed in game 1 I made sure to make arrangements to be at his second game. His frame screams D1 guard and his skillset backed that up against some tough competition at Gaso. Explosive at all 3 levels he displayed a variety of moves like crossovers & step back 3’s that were nothing but net. Jamarian is also a strong finisher at the basket and off ball looking to clean up rebounds if needed. His offensive skillset was crazy but the defensive side to go along with that is what makes him a d1 lock. He was able to guard the 1-5, yes 1-5 and did it well. He picked the PG pockets several times and earned a easy layup or dunk, he also was able to drop down against a 6’8 center and guard the basket causing problems for his opponent to get the ball or get up a clean shot. All of this combined earned him a top prospect spot for the day, Jamarian is a HOOPER and should be on your radar for the season at Honor Armor Academy.
2024 Cyrus Shaw Cyrus Shaw 6’3″ | CG Universal Academy | 2024 State TX is a baller. Not sure what his true position in because he was everywhere doing everything. Lets start with his frame, physical on both sides not scared to initiate the contact and bounces off anyone in his way. He was tough off the dribble but also as a post/midrange presence having a good knack for scoring the ball. He led his team overall keeping them competitive when things got cold. Very unselfish maybe to unselfish at times, willing to make the dump pass downlow of the drive. No one was able to match his physicality and he ended up having a field day from the paint area 20+ points with 10+ rebounds. There are some instincts you just cant teach and his checks those boxes off his raw effort alone. Cyrus has a high motor that helped him finish shots in transition. Cyrus has bi potential to have a breakout season state wide at University Academy. He should be on your radar.
6’9 David Iweze David Iweze 6’9″ | PF iSchool of Lewisville | 2025 State #152 Nation TX was my top graded big from the event. He looked like he put on another inch or so since I seen him this summer and dominant is the key word for him. He showed everything a college program is looking for and some in the post area. Offensively he’s your classic stretch 4/5 able to operate with post up, pro footwork and a soft touch at the rim. He also runs the floor and sets quick IQ screens very well for his size. Defensively he’s a man in the paint, altering anything that comes his way, he also grabbed 10 plus rebounds both games. He had a few poster dunks and can be explosive even with a defender in front of him. He’s a D1 lock and will have a breakout season this year for Lewisville iSchool.
TK Lawson
TK Lawson
My first time catching 6’7 TK Lawson and what a athlete I’ve been sleeping on. He also had a good summer rising his stock and looks to be ready to make some national noise this year at PSAT which may be the top Prep in Texas this year. Long and athletic, he’s quick and shifty off the dribble and prefers to dunk on you rather then lay it up. He’s also a potent shooter and at 6’7 of coarse adds length to the defense and rebounding. Look for him to creep up the rankings this year playing a tough schedule he’ll be in the spotlight on several occasions.
