Continue ReadingPace returns their backcourt duo of Eric Chatfield Eric Chatfield 5’11” | PG Pace Academy | 2025 State GA and KJ Greene that took them all the way last year and they come into this season as one of the best, if not the best backcourt in the state. Chatfield is one of the best playmakers around, such a creative and instictual passer. His quick handle allows him to penetrate the teeth of the defense and create open looks for others. If left open, Chatfield can burn the three-ball from range. Pace looks poised for another playoff run and Chatfield will be one of the catalysts.
Marcus Smith Marcus Smith 6’0″ | PG Walnut Grove | 2025 State GA is back for his junior year at Walnut Grove and takes over the driver’s seat as Deston Christian recently left for Legacy Early College. While the Smith-Christian duo would have been one of the best in 4A, I’m expecting Smith to now embrace more of a primary scoring role. Smith is a shifty little point guard that loves to get downhill. He’s an excellent finisher around the rim and if he can get to the launch pad, he’ll throw it down everytime. Smith looks ready to take a major step forward in his junior year.
Highlights
While Hutcherson was a vital role player for the Golden Bears as a freshman, I can see him stepping into stardom as a sophomore. He’s added a ton of confidence and moxy, capable of so much with the ball in his hands. I expect Hutcherson to play a lot more at the 1 this year as his handle has really progressed. He’s great on the defensive end too and will have to square off with some high-level guards if Holy Innocents makes a deep run. Hutcherson’s defense could be crucial to their championship hopes as Holy Innocents looks to compete for the trophy.
KJ Greene seems like a shoe-in for this list after leading Pace to a state championship and notching all-state honors as a junior. Greene now begins his senior campaign and after committing to UCF, he’s focused solely on another ring. Greene is a big guard that can fill it up from every level. He shoots the three-ball well, has some sweet touch around the paint, and can finish at the rim using his size and athleticism. In the opencourt, Greene is so fast yet incredibly smooth. Pace Academy’s team this year will play entertaining basketball but still winning basketball, a must-see squad for hoops fans around Atlanta.
The high school hoop scene gets flooded with transfers nowadays but Holy Innocents managed to keep their core of Wilson, Hutcherson, and Hopkins in tact. Led by Wilson, the Bears have what it takes to go all the way. Caleb Wilson Caleb Wilson 6’10” | PF Holy Innocents | 2025 State #3 Nation GA is not only one of the best players in Georgia, he’s one of the top juniors in America and earned that status with a huge summer campaign. He’s extremely skilled on the offensive end, able to stretch the floor and hit shots, handle the ball on the perimeter, and throw down dunks in traffic. As long as Wilson’s healthy, he should be an all-state guy come March.
