After being held in Lansing and a four year stay in Mount Pleasant the camp was held in Grand Rapids this past Sunday. Despite its west side locale. A handful of players from greater Detroit area stood out. Following are five that caught my eye.
Joshua Gibson Joshua Gibson 5'11" | PG Birmingham Groves | 2025 State MI 6-2 2025 Birmingham Groves (pictured) One of my first times catching this prospects. Came away very impressed. In drill stations his explosive athleticism was readily apparent. Lived above the rim at 6-2. It was seemingly effortless elevation as well. Didn’t need much room for takeoff and made it look easy. Was hard to guard in the one-on-one drill station. Won the “ King of the Hill”portion. Showed a quick first step to go along with the vertical explosion. Wasn’t just jumping over everybody though. Also displayed a clever array of jab steps and step backs that he used to get his shot off. Good ball handler as well. Could be an under the radar recruit two more years of development.
Mason Parker Mason Parker PG Troy | 2025 State MI 6-0 2025 Troy A known commodity after a big grassroots campaign. Parker only participated in the scrimmage portion of the camp due to a late arrival. However that was enough to be easily one of the top performers on the day. Is a creative ball handler. Allowing him to get to the basket with ease. Is a clever finisher around the basket. This makes up for the lack of elite explosion to the rim. Note the qualifier of “elite” though. Don’t misinterpret that to think he is not a good athlete. He can dunk at 6-0 and is continuing to improve athletically as he physically matures. Is left handed. However with the way he plays. It is really not that important. Excels at going either way and does not favor a side. Had perhaps the highlight of the day. A beautiful one handed half court bounce pass through traffic to hit a player in stride.
Sam Howard Sam Howard 6'2" | SG Detroit Catholic Central | 2024 State MI 6-2 2024 Detroit Catholic Central A unorthodox player whose game grows on you the more you watch it. The lefty found various ways to score on Saturday. Both beyond the arc and at the basket. Threw his body around and appeared to enjoy contact. Showed the strength to finish through it. Isn’t a natural point guard but passes well in pick and roll situations. The Shamrocks will have a new coach and system this year. Perhaps that will present some new opportunities for Howard in his senior season.
Vince Salmon 6-8 2025 Brighton Perhaps this Ann Arbor area big should look for real estate near the MSA facilities. I mean that as a joke but it underscores how well he has played at these gyms in two successive showcases in Grand Rapids. Was the biggest player both this Saturday and at the Prep Hoops Top 250. More importantly he played like at. Was good at establishing deep post position. Once there showed a soft touch around the basket. Is not the most explosive athlete you will see. However makes up for it in a variety ways. First and foremost he both competes and works very hard. Is also fundamentally sound showing the ability to finish over both shoulders. Thick frame and isn’t going to get pushed around by anyone— period. Salmon is an example of what these type of showcases are about. A player I had not heard of up until two weekends ago. Is definitely on my radar for the upcoming season.
Levi Stambaugh Levi Stambaugh 6'0" | CG Mason | 2025 State MI 6-0 2025 Mason I am well aware that Stambaugh is not technically from the Detroit area. That being said, GM does have a plant in the Lansing area so we’ll include him in the “Motor City” grouping. In all seriousness his play simply warrants the mention. Like Salmon, has also played well at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo a few weekends ago. Penetrated well at both camps. Offsets his size with a nice floater that he was able to get over larger defenders. About halfway through the scrimmage portion. The three ball started to fall in a big way. I counted three in a row from all over the court. If that shot is a consistent part of his game. This could be a next level point guard. The ball handling and passing ability are already at that level.
