In this class, we have many talented players at the point guard spot, and will look at how well they command the offense and their overall play. Here are my top point guards for the 2024 class.
Pettiford is more of a scoring point as opposed to your traditional pass-first point guard which gives Pettiford the elite ability to finish at the rim. He is extremely athletic and uses his athleticism to hang in the air longer than most defenders so he can get a shot up at the last second. He can create some difficult up-and-under finishes around the rim. His shooting ability is great; he likes to use his speed and tight handles to create open space for his jump shots. Pettiford thrives in the fastbreak as he looks to seek contact in those situations to draw fouls.
Robinson is a shifty player who uses a lot of quick bursts and movements to get by defenders. He has tight handles he uses to get anywhere he wants to on the court. His quick crossover helps him blow by defenders for easy layups or open jump shots. Robinson has a good eye-fake he will use when driving to the rim getting defenders to fall for it. He can create some athletic finishes around the rim hanging in the air longer than normal. At 6’3″ he can guard multiple positions on the perimeter.
Jones is an athletic and high-flying point guard who will look to score the basketball any chance he gets. He is very quick with the ball in his hands making defenders miss trying to stop him. He can get up to the rim in a hurry and defenders will look to get out of the way once he has his mind set on dunking the basketball. Jones has a consistent three-point shot as well making it tough on certain matchups for the other team. In the fastbreak setting jones is excellent as he uses speed and finishing ability to put pressure on defenses when going inside the paint.
Williams can do just about anything you ask out of him at the point guard position. He can score as good as anyone in this class. Williams can use his tight and shifty handles to get to any spot on the court. He will look to create space will those handles for his shots. Williams can get to the rim whenever he wants and has a soft touch around the rim. His decision-making is impressive as he seemingly always makes the correct pass when he’s in control. He does a great job of setting up his teammates for open shots drawing double teams and using pick-n-rolls or pick-n-pops.
Highlights
Massung is as athletically gifted of a player as they come with him looking to attack the rim at will. At 6’2″ Massung can glide in the air and makes defenders question themselves if they want to test him in the air or not. He will look to put a body on you when attacking the rim and will use his soft touch to loop around jump-friendly defenders. He has a great gather-step he uses when inside the midrange area and has a smooth shot from deep. He uses the quick crossover to create space for his shots. On defense, he uses athleticism to chase down block players in fastbreak situations.
