Continue ReadingBurleyson ran the point for his group at times yesterday and was incredibly solid as a scorer and playmaker. He has a smooth jumper and knows how to get to his spots to knock down mid-range pull-ups and 3s. While a good shooter off the catch, he did most of his work off the dribble in the games I saw yesterday. Also showed poise to deliver nice passes to open teammates and make the easy read. Playing alongside Caden Ryker Caden Ryker 6’0″ | PG The North Carolina Leadership Academy | 2026 State NC at NCLA, the two of them should have another impressive year.

Cheltenham shined as a primary facilitator as well as a slasher that got downhill with regularity. He was effective out of ball screens and other actions where he could turn corners and get headed towards the rim. After defenses realized he could score with ease, the gravity he brought to the court let him spray passes out to his teammates for open looks. Also brought an intensity and toughness when matched up with other guards on the defensive end. Should see good burn for Rolesville this season.
McKnight is looking like another point guard that should have a strong year, as he was an interesting combo guard yesterday. He also looked to get his teammates involved first, getting paint touches and then playing from there. Had some impressive vision and passes yesterday. He’s got a strong, sturdy frame to overpower defenders, and doesn’t shy away from contact at the hoop. I’ll be looking to monitor him this year as he transfers to St. Stephen’s in Hickory.

Boush contributed as a intriguing forward prospect in his group, with a lot of energy and heart being left on the court. He ran the floor hard, looking to help space the floor and get his teammates open in transition. Attacked the glass really well especially on offense, where he used his size to win battles for offensive rebounds and got some easy putbacks to keep his team in the drivers seat. He can be a capable screener and roller on offense as well. Should be poised to play a big role for his NCCSAA team.
Vines was definitely an eye catcher throughout the tournament, throwing down some OMG dunks and showcasing a lot of vertical pop. He’s got springs in his legs as he not just attacked the rim but used it to dominate the glass and rim protection. Was able to step out and knock down some jumpers when defenses took the drive away. Defensively battled hard all day, matching up on a variety of prospects of different sizes/strength levels. West Cabarrus will be better with him this year.
Haynes is a guy I hadn’t heard much about until yesterday, but immediately popped off the page as a wiry forward that has lots of potential. He’s definitely still raw in some areas, but showcases a lot of talent, especially on the defensive end. He blocked multiple shots and walled up well inside to take away easy layups. Offensively he cut well, stepped out and hit a couple jumpers and slashed to the rim with pace. He should be in line for a big senior season at DSA.

This wasn’t the first time I had seen Walker this summer, but I still left impressed with how his game has improved. Super explosive athlete that doesn’t necessarily show it immediately on the floor. Went up off the drive and threw down a couple of mean dunks during the game I saw him in. Thought that his ability to attack the basket and get to the free throw line as well was phenomenal. Defensively is long and able to move laterally as well. Fayetteville Academy returns him and many others this year.

Denning is a young big who should continue to take big leaps as he’s only scratching the surface of his potential. A burly forward, he showed off his post defense guarding his opponents bigger forwards and stayed between them and the basket well. I was impressed with his physicality primarily, as he pushed bigs off their spots and made life hard to score. He rebounded well and overall played a solid game as a post big. I’m curious to see more of his offensive game as he didn’t get many touches, but he played well on the day.
