made his college decision. The skilled 6-foot-3 senior guard announced that Utah State would be his destination for the next level, bringing out a round of cheers from the family, friends, and North Portland community members who were there to witness his commitment.
Hill chose the Aggies over the other members of his top five, New Mexico, Oregon State, San Francisco, and San Jose State. “They’re in a great conference and I’ve got a good relationship with the coach, something we’ve had over the years,” Hill said. “After I went on my visit there, it just felt like all love. It was the place I wanted to be, the place I wanted to hoop.”
Hill had made some other campus visits, but it was on his official visit to Logan when he was sold. “Really I liked everything,” Hill said. “The campus was a good size, they’ve got a great student section for the games, and they’re in a great league. They win at a high level and I feel that fits my type of game. They play a lot of pick and roll, and I like to use the pick and roll a lot so I feel like that’s going to benefit my game as well.”
On the court, Hill further developed his game last season at Arizona Compass Prep. He detailed how playing there his junior year there benefitted him. “It was a great experience and being out there I learned a lot about myself, and I got closer with God as well,” Hill said. “I learned a lot about myself outside of hoop, and on the floor. I’m just a better person overall.”
Despite his success there, Hill made the choice to return home to North Portland where he’s hopeful for big things in 2023-24. “I wanted to come back, show for my family, and try to get a state title for where I started at, and have a fun time,” Hill said.
New Roosevelt head coach Jamarr Lawson feels all of this will have its impact for years to come. “He’s really setting the tone for future Roughriders,” said Roosevelt head coach Jamarr Lawson. “It shows that you can accomplish things right here in your backyard. There have been a lot of challenges and bumps in the road, and that’s going to come as nothing is easy, but it’s a really proud and humbling moment – I’m just so proud of this guy.”
With his commitment, Hill is the third member of the Class of 2024 to make a Division I college commitment, joining Summit’s
