Our next issue in the series highlights the Queen City 4A conference, with some strong teams in North Mecklenburg and Chambers, and some other upstart, plucky programs. Check out our picks for the all conference teams below.
First Team
Last Season Stats (West Charlotte) – 15.5 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 3.0 APG
Traylor is a transfer from West Charlotte who will immediately step into the Vikings backcourt and produce as a real combo guard that both facilitates for his teammates as well as attack for his own buckets. When handling the ball he acts primarily as a passer, using his gravity to attack defenses and get easy dump offs or kicks for shots. He shot the ball well last year and should continue to do so with more floor spacing and less attention at once on this loaded squad. He’ll pick up more interest and help his new team to their ultimate goal, a state championship this year.
Last Season Stats – N/A
Maxwell plays a lot like his brother, Tristan, used to when he was at North Meck. Both shoot the cover off the ball, but Trey has more of a interior and mid-range scoring acument to his game. Good off the catch shooter, but when he dribbles he’s wanting to get to the hoop. Really thrives as a complementary scorer that can get open looks and not have to create his own all the time. He’s the kind of bigger guard that will thrive at the next level, whether it be D1 or D2. Look for him to continue producing this upcoming year.
Last Season Stats – 12.6 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 60% FG
Patton has bounce and scoring touch for days as a downhill slasher who should see more college looks come his way this year. Always been a driver in the halfcourt and in transition can tear the rim off with his athleticism and speed. Able to make an impact on the defensive end due to those same traits. Still improving his jumper and perimeter game at this point in time. Should be a big senior year for him with Chambers.
Last Season Stats – N/A
The best scorer in the state by a country mile, Evans will look to build team success on a wildly successful individual year last year. You name the situation, he can score from it. Isolation off the dribble, in the post, off a drive and kick, he will knock down shots or score right through your chest. Also aware and able to make a dump off or extra pass for a better look. Reminiscent of a smaller Brandon Ingram. Needs to add weight and improve his motor when the ball isn’t in his hands and on offense, but those will be corrected in college. Definite NBA upside for a guy who’s destined to be POY once again in the conference.
Last Season Stats – 14.8 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.5 BPG
Hanson is a high level player who should post big numbers once again this year. Great interior scorer with a left hand coaches would die for. Back to the basket game is strong, with multiple moves to go to. Also can be a capable passer when teams sag or double him down low. Getting better on defense and rebounding, but more athleticism and a higher motor would be even more beneficial. He projects as a 4 man at the next level who can command the interior, and should do the same this season.
Second Team
Last Season Stats – 12.5 PPG, 3.3 APG, 1.4 SPG
Connor, along with teammate Rassell Young Rassell Young 6’2″ | CG Mallard Creek | 2026 State NC , are the dynamic backcourt pieces that should continue to improve and propel Mallard Creek towards a better year this season. Undersized but knows how to use the physical attributes he has which are craftiness, a quick first step and agility to boot. Gets a lot of drives into the paint and makes defenses think about him. Great shooter coming off screens or a catch and shoot shot. Should continue to improve his shooting numbers and get more Ws for his team this year.
Last Season Stats – 10.3 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.4 SPG
Eley should be able to put up more counting stats this year as the lead man at Hopewell, tracking to make his last year his best one. He’s a jack of all trades guard that can be counted on to do a bit of everything on both ends. Football player who has strength and burst to impact the game both on the court and the field. Capable shooter when left open which makes defenses space out. Can guard his man with toughness and intensity, probably should be guarding the top guy on other teams each night out. Will be curious to see how he improves with the departure of Quay Watson Quay Watson 6’0″ | CG Hopewell | 2024 State NC .
Last Season Stats – 11.9 PPG, 6.9 APG, 37% 3FG
Pure point guard that will give Chambers a massive piece they need in their quest for a conference/state title. Very crafty with his finishing in the paint, able to attack bigger and taller defenders well. Impressive touch and floater arsenal for his age and level of development that should translate to college on Day 1. Volume shooter from 3 that can get going in a hurry. Smaller guard which means he’s up in your jersey on defense, with hands active trying to get steals. Very well-rounded package that should end up at the LM to MM level as a steal.
Highlights
Last Season Stats – 10.8 PPG, 42 3PM, 40% 3FG
An elite shooter that should only continue to add to his game and make him attractive to next level coaches. Playmaking abilities have taken a big jump over the last 12 months, become super refined in his passing mechanics as well as his vision. Able to make some real highlight reel passes while keeping his turnovers in check. Crafty and fluid finisher as well as an elite shooter as mentioned earlier. He will create a lot for himself as well as others, continuing to shine this upcoming season.
Last Season Stats (West Charlotte) – 8.9 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2.2 ORPG
Kerr is a long, agile guard/wing prospect that displays elite ball skills for his size. An aggressive, downhill game is his package on offense with the ability to aggressively attack the rim. Rim-rattling dunks are the name of his game. Can make plays with the ball and break down defenders in isolation as well. Defensively uses his length and activity to make an impact, and can guard multiple positions each night. Needs to improve perimeter game, but is only scratching the surface of his potential this year.
