As we approach the preseason for high school basketball, we will take a look at some different categories of players and those that excel in those roles in different areas of the state. Today, we take a look at part one of the top floor generals in the Northern VA area.

Floor generals by design are players who typically make a good team better, and that's exactly what Hammond does as he runs the show for one of the best teams in the country and makes everyone on the team better. The Rhode Island commit is dynamic off the bounce as he has blazing speed and a quick first step, he's able to touch the paint at will and he's a threat to both score it and make plays for others and he sets the tone defensively as a lock down on ball defender who can guard the length of the court.

[player_tooltip player_id='1259546' first='Jamari' last='Hodnett'] | 6'1” PG | Bishop Ireton 2024

Not all floor generals are superstar players who are go-to guys on their team, but rather are players who find ways to be successful with other scoring threats and that's exactly what Hodnett has showed over the past few years with Ireton and New World. The 6'1” lead guard doesn't need to score the ball as he plays with a great motor on both ends and is willing to do the dirty work to help his team, he has great feel and vision and makes the easy and correct play consistently and he makes a positive impact for his team on both ends of the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id='1489081' first='Jason' last='Penn'] | 6'2” PG | Marshall 2024

Penn is one of the best point guards in the NOVA public schools and while he's able to create for himself and score it he's even better when he's around other talented players that he can set up and make better. Penn plays with great pace and handles pressure well as he's a one man press break, he shows great burst and has the ability to get in the teeth of the defense where he makes good decisions and he can pick his spots and score it from multiple levels as well.

Kejuan Richburg | 5'7” PG | Fairfax Christian 2024

If you're looking for the epitome of a floor general in the NOVA area, look no further than Richburg who helped lead Fairfax Christian to a state championship and was one of their most impactful players while scoring in single digits due to his ability to set the tone on both ends of the floor. While he's not the biggest guy he understands that and uses his speed and quickness to get under ball handlers, he gets them into sets and gets the scorers the ball in the right position and when things break down he's able to create off the bounce and make plays for others when it looks like there's nothing available.

[player_tooltip player_id='1948417' first='Steven' last='Cruz'] | 5'10” PG | James Madison 2024

Cruz is one of the more unknown players in the NOVA area that has put together a really good career both in high school and in AAU, and while he doesn't really look the part he has a great skillset to go along with a high IQ that makes him very impactful. He makes very good decisions on the basketball and knows the simple and right play to make within the set, he can move off the ball where he moves well and can set his feet to knock down shots and he is willing to do whatever it takes to help his team win.

[player_tooltip player_id='1494108' first='Aiden' last='Argabright'] | 6'0” PG | St. Stephen's St. Agnes 2025

Argabright has become one of the best guards in the state in the 2025 class, and he's coming off a big summer with a talented New World team where he ran the show and showcased the ability to impact the game in winning ways across the board. He's shifty off the bounce and able to get downhill where he can make plays for others or draw contact and get to the line, he has shown the ability to take over and make tough shots when he needs to and he's a natural leader who will do what it takes to help his team and that his teammates will follow.
