by now. Despite his boyish looks and smaller size, the 5-foot-10 guard has been a killer on the court with his sneaky moves and clutch shooting and now entering his senior season, he’s hopeful the right opportunity at the next level will come along. He spent the off-season playing his Southridge teammates and AAU ball with G.R.I.T., working on getting better and catching the eyes of college recruiters along the way.
“I enjoy playing basketball and I had fun playing,” Groenig said. “I’ve been trying to work on my left hand and pull up a lot, and I feel like I’ve been getting that more in the game, just like with off-season work and then trying to get it in real games.”
In addition to playing, Groenig spent the off-season working on his college recruitment. He and his father toured a number of schools around the state, and Corban and Eastern Oregon stood out to the young guard. He also has been hearing from a number of D-III schools and Pacific has offered him a roster spot.
“Their campus is nice and I really like their coach – he’s coaching right now, so I’d enjoy playing for him,” Groenig said. “My goal is to hopefully play in the NAIA though, so that’s what I’m looking at.”
Groenig is hopeful a big senior season will lead to some more opportunities – and a lot will be watching as Southridge stands to be one of the pre-season favorites, not only in the Metro League but in all of 6A.
“I’m really excited,” Groenig said. “We’ve been working towards this, freshman, sophomore, junior year, so I feel like hopefully it pays off in the end and I think it will. I’m hoping for First Team All-League again and then getting to the Chiles Center.”
Groenig currently ranks as the #37 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2024 rankings.
