Here’s a look at some new names who left really good first impressions on Saturday. Presented in numerical order of their jerseys and excludes players who were listed as top performers yesterday.
Paris looks like a player to place a long term bet on. He’s got crazy long arms and legs with a compact midsection that reminds me of former Blue Devil Marques Warrick at the same age. Once he stops growing, expect J’Chaii to be 6’3 or taller. He showed a quick first step getting into the paint and solid form on his jump shot. I’m interested to see more of Paris as he develops.
Highlights
Stewart is another guard who looks like he’s going to be several inches taller when he’s done growing. Amare has good burst and consistently finished at a high level on Saturday. Henderson is going to need some players to step up this year and Amare looks like he could contribute at the varsity level right away.
Green was a favorite of all the coaches and staff on Saturday. Affectionately nicknamed “mouse” by coaches at camp, Eli was usually the smallest player on the floor when he was out there but played harder than almost everyone. He was mixing it up with the post players and taking their rebounds. Green won’t likely contribute on varsity this year but as hard as he plays, he’ll be a nice player for North Oldham, long term.
Shy was a little bit of a slow starter on Saturday but once he decided to play his game, he looked like a top guard at the event. Darian was lightning quick and an above average passer. He didn’t force his offense at all and was actually more willing than most to make the extra pass to a teammate. He’s a fun one to track in Louisville.
Carothers was on what I think was the most talented team at camp. The fact that he could still stand out on a loaded roster bodes well for Dre in the long term. He’s more confident as a driver than a shooter right now but Carothers showed he can score at every level. He also had several steals late in the game when I was watching.
