Throughout the day, various classes competed in a showcase game. I was able to catch the 2028 game, which gave me plenty of optimism for the future of Baltimore High School basketball. These prospects are entering their eighth grade year, but have a chance to be names that we highlight for years to come.
Jaylen Allen | 6’7
Allen’s size stood out immediately among his competitors, but it was his mobility and fluidness as an athlete for that size that really intrigues you. He ran the floor consistently, altered shots around the basket and finished his looks in the paint even if it meant cleaning up his own miss. It’s safe to say that Allen will be sought after by the highest of programs around the Baltimore metro area.
Kharter Tobias | 6’6
Tobias was another prospect who caught my attention due to the combination of his size, activity and physical frame. He plays with a junkyard dog approach in fighting for position in the paint or embracing contact on his attempts at the basket. He’s a lefty who showed some comfort in getting to his own shot from the mid-range and three-point area.
Antwan Williams | 6’2
Williams is a southpaw combo guard who I caught in action last winter at a middle school game. His creative ability with the ball both as a scorer and playmaker offer plenty of hope for the future as a dynamic prospect. He has a tight handle, twitch and decent body control for his age on drives.
Chauncey Word | 5’9
Word took over the game in the final two minutes by scoring eight-straight points for his team. It turned into a back-and-forth battle with his defender, but Word got the better of him converting on two triples and a tough drive. He’s a quick point guard who can use an array of moves to get his defender off balance and quickly gets into his shot once space is created.
