The straw that stirs the drink for the Hawks, Noun Harder was fifth on the team in scoring last season, opting to set up his talented teammates instead. He was among the best in the state at protecting the ball, posting a 3.43-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, turning the ball over fewer than two times a game, a notable achievement for a player with the ball in his hands as much as he does.
2.) 2024 Kyan Jones Kyan Jones 5'11" | PG North Union | 2024 State IA (North Union) – 150
A quick 5-10 lead guard who puts constant pressure on opposing defenses with his speed, Jones dished out more than two times as many assists as any other Warrior last season, while also leading the team in steals. North Union could be a surprise team to keep an eye on this season with five of their top six coming back to a 15-win team, and Jones is a significant piece of that puzzle.
3.) 2024 Cole Kindred (Keota) – 128
Coming off a 21-win season and bringing five of their top six players back, Keota has a chance to make it to the state tournament for the first time since 2014 this winter. Kindred is a big part of that, finishing second on the team in scoring last season while also serving as the primary ball-handler and decision-maker. He protects the ball fairly well and is a creative passer who sees the floor well.
4.) 2024 Logan Bacon (Lake Mills) – 119
Bacon wasn’t a major scoring threat for the Bulldogs last season, averaging just 4.5 points a game, but his size and physicality on the perimeter at 6-2 and with big, strong shoulders, provided him with an advantage against most defenders and allowed him to see over the defense and find open teammates. On a Lake Mills team that should once again be loaded with offensive weapons, don’t expect him to score much more, but he’ll be a good facilitator once again.
5.) 2025 Mason Bechen Mason Bechen 6'1" | PG North Linn | 2025 State IA (North Linn) – 117
Bechen might be the best all-around player in 1A basketball this winter, a dynamic three-level scorer and playmaker who impacts the game with his speed, IQ, and talent on both ends of the floor. He averaged 14.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.0 steals a game as a sophomore with 52-47-81 shooting splits, and showed the ability to take over games in the blink of an eye on many occasions.
6.) 2025 Matthew Klostermann Matthew Klostermann 5'10" | PG Central City | 2025 State IA (Central City) – 116
A quick 5-10 lead guard who also led the Wildcats in scoring last season (15.0 points per game), Klostermann uses his quickness to put pressure on opposing defenders, getting into the painted area where he’s a good finisher, but also a gifted passer with excellent court vision.
7.) 2025 Gabe Funk Gabe Funk 6'1" | SG Lenox | 2025 State IA (Lenox) – 114
A skilled 6-1 guard coming off a fantastic sophomore season, Funk has the ball in his hands a ton for the Tigers and he produced at an extremely high level last season, averaging 18.2 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 2.6 steals a game with impressive 51-40-68 shooting splits. He values possessions and uses his skill and quickness to get the defense on their heels constantly.
8) 2025 Adam Sobczak Adam Sobczak 5'10" | PG Holy Trinity Catholic | 2025 State IA (Holy Trinity Catholic) – 113
The Crusaders could be a surprise team this season, returning all but one player from last year’s team that was playing good basketball down the stretch. Sobczak is an athletic 5-10 point guard who doesn’t look to score much, but is a good lead guard who gets his teammates involved at a high clip and limits turnovers. He’s quick and sees the floor really well.
9.) 2024 Dominic Coleman (BGM) – 111
Coleman is another player who is pass-first, a 6-1 wing who gets his teammates involved and had the ball in his hands a ton last year for the Bears. He’s not a major threat to score, but he’ll keep the ball moving.
10.) 2024 Conner Nally (Bedford) – 108
Bedford won 21 games last season and could do similar damage this year with three of their top five coming back, including Nally, a skilled guard who makes a major impact on both ends of the floor. He’s a 6-0 lead guard who can get into the teeth of the defense and find open teammates.
