Phenom Hoops’ annual Summer Havoc tournament was back in action this weekend, featuring some of the best programs and prospects in the Carolinas. Among them were those representing North Carolina’s Triad, an overlooked, underrated region home to some big-time ball players. The NC Spartans , the premier grassroots program of the region, were in the building. Several Spartan teams showed up and showed out this weekend, putting themselves on the map for the rest of the Carolinas to take note of. Let’s take a closer look at the standout prospects the NC Spartans had to offer in this year’s annual Phenom Summer Havoc tournament.
Nate Keegan

Class of 2025 shooting guard Nate Keegan is an integral piece of this team’s core. Keegan is a jack of all trades who comes up big in the clutch on both ends of the floor. His elite playmaking ability paired with his high-intensity style of play make him an elite prospect. At 6’3″, Keegan is a strong, physical guard who uses his build to enhance every facet of his game. Keegan is an offensively adept, high-IQ caliber player who plays at a nice pace. He can excel in the guard spot or on the wing. His versatility on offense makes him an elite scoring threat. Keegan has a quick handle, can penetrate and find the open man, and knows how to get others involved. He is a gifted scorer who is explosive with the ball in his hands. He is patient for plays to develop and makes the right play with the rock. He’s got a quick first step that gets him to the rim, a consistent 15-footer, and the ability to knock down contested shots from behind the arc. Keegan’s frame allows him to have an active role as a defender and rebounder. He battles on the boards, is not afraid to match up and lock down 1-5, and can execute fast break offense off outlets. Nate Keegan is a prospect who gets after it on both ends of the floor, battles for possessions and excels in his role as a movable wing.

The same narrative has been told regarding Mickey’s game since he first arrived on the grassroots scene; that he has a non-athlete who is not a threat to defend. Ask anyone who has ever matched up against Mickey with this preconceived notion, and they’ll warn you not to make the same mistake. Mickey is an absolute unit on both ends of the floor who continues to prove doubters wrong. Bryson Mickey Bryson Mickey 6’0″ | CG Davie | 2025 NC is a prospect with an elite basketball IQ and an even better feel for the game. He is tough as nails, doing whatever it takes to win each possession. Mickey is first and foremost a floor general. He is a premiere decision-maker who coaches can rely on to make the right play. He enhances his teammates’ games with his unselfish, pass-first style of play. Mickey is a guard who plays with patience, poise, and purpose. He is an all-around polished guard who is dynamic in the backcourt. Mickey is a versatile scoring threat who can get it done on all three levels. He’s a strong downhill driver who can make tough finishes at the rim, has a knock-down pull-up game around the perimeter, and has a consistent, good-looking stroke from behind the arc. Kam Mcknight Kam Mcknight 6’1″ | SG North Surry | 2025 State NC is a premier ball handler who excels in his role as a true point guard. Mcknight is a floor general who has an elite ability to make the right play. He is a pass-first kind of guard who has an abundance of scoring weapons in his arsenal that makes him a versatile threat. Mcknight is vocal in the backcourt and plays with excellent poise. He knows how to get his shooters activated and where to find the open man. When it’s his time to score the rock, he can transition into an elite scorer. Mcknight has developed a consistent shot on all three levels which forces defenders to play him tight. Trip Mcmillen is a prospect ready to take the class of 2025 by storm. Standing a true 6’6″, Mcmillen is a wing who plays with a ton of size and skill. Mcmillen is extremely versatile as a scoring threat and can make big-time plays. He is a polished prospect with a ton of skill on the offensive end of the floor. Mcmillen’s athleticism enhances every facet of his game from hitting contested shots to grabbing rebounds on the glass. He is a high-intensity player who plays with a fire that is hard to put out once he finds his rhythm. Mcmillen is a knock-down shooting threat who has developed a consistent three-ball. He’s got an exceptional handle for a prospect his size and can make things happen in the open court. His size and length allow him to hit off-balance, contested shots at all levels. Mcmillen is a warrior on defense who steps up in big moments. Trip McMillen is a prospect I expect to find his way into the class of 2025 rankings in the weeks to come.
