The Wayne St basketball program kicked off the elite camp season with a sold out camp this Saturday. Within such a deep talented field. New names are bound to emerge. Following are six that caught my attention.
Cannen Houser 6-5 2024 Fort Wayne Carroll (IN) Not a new name for Hoosier high school basketball fans. However for this Michigan based writer this was my most extensive viewing. Caught him briefly with Indy Heat Red. Really popped in this setting though. Showed off the full arsenal of a diverse perimeter scoring skill set. Well schooled footwork kept him seemingly always square with the basket. Allowing him to get his shot off quickly and efficiently from unique angles. Uses his athleticism and size to rise easily in the mid range. This bounce also makes him threat in transition and on the glass.
Ashton Goul Ashton Goul 6'7" | SF Fraser | 2024 State MI 6-7 2024 Fraser (MI) (pictured) Not a completely new name for me. However this is the first time I have seen him this summer. Also comes from a high school program not known for producing prospects. Consequently might be flying a bit under the radar. I really liked him last summer with CTM Select on the Prep Hoops Circuit. Has gotten markedly bigger and stronger since then. Has always been able to stretch the floor with a deft outside shooting touch. Didn’t do as much of that on Saturday. However made plays at the rim and showed increased elevation. Was a factor both offensively and defensively. Skill set makes him a prototypical stretch four somewhere at the next level.
Jovontae Ross 5-11 2025 Flint Powers Catholic (MI) Unlike the other players on this list. A completely new find. I came away very impressed. First caught my attention during the shooting drills. Was put in a station with Shane Rykse Shane Rykse 6'0" | CG Schoolcraft | 2024 State MI and the Yeager twins. You are not going to find three better shooters in the state of Michigan anywhere. Ross matched them shot for shot. Unsurprisingly their group did not lose a single competition. Moving onto to the scrimmage. Ross showed the full point guard package. Could change direction on the drop of dime. Also displayed excellent speed and acceleration. There were a lot of point guards with big reputations in the camp. Ross showed he could play with any of them. After being down for a little bit. Something special could be brewing at a Powers program with a rich basketball tradition. With the transfer of the Cull twins (who were also present and played well) from Davison. The 2025 class is looking very strong.
Charles Kage Charles Kage 6'6" | PF Riverview Gabriel Richard | 2025 State MI 6-7 2025 Riverview Gabriel Richard (MI) Definitely not a new name for this scout pushing his mid forties. The River Rogue squads of the mid nineties featured a big time post presence of a similar name. The younger Kage is making a name for himself after having a good spring with The Academy O3 on the NY2LA circuit. On Saturday showed the versatility to play both at or away from the basket. Fluid athlete who ran the court smoothly. Will form a good inside out duo with fellow 2025 prospect Luke Westerdale Luke Westerdale 6'1" | SG Gabriel Richard | 2025 State MI at Richard in the next two seasons.
Kyle Brown Kyle Brown 5'10" | CG Forest Hills Northern | 2026 State MI 6-1 2026 Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern (MI) Not going to sugarcoat it. Wasn’t blown away the first time I saw this prospect with the Grand Rapids Storm in Fort Wayne. Not the case this past weekend. Shot the ball really well. While playing with more strength and a better overall sense of confidence. As the shot started fall driving lanes began to open up. He exploited them well. Showing the ability to drive to both the right and the left. Coming off an excellent freshman campaign. Part of a young group of Huskies that could be leading a resurgence at Northern in the coming years.
Cassius Bont Cassius Bont 6'2" | PG Byron Center | 2026 State MI 6-2 2026 Byron Center (MI) While his fellow west side 2026 point guard Brown was playing increased confidence. You don’t have to worry about that with Bont. I don’t want to make this sound like a negative or that he is difficult to play with. But this young player does not lack confidence. Highly competitive and doesn’t back down from anyone. Already has a nice frame and plenty of height. Penetrates with force and without fear. Has deep range on the perimeter and will pull from anywhere. Missed the first part of the spring with an injury. Now appears to be at full string. Ran with a Swish club that features a bevy of good young west side guards.
