Continue ReadingThis spring a number of guys that were considered fringe D-I prospects in the Class of 2024 got a chance to show their stuff in front of college coaches on the AAU circuit. Marley Zeller Marley Zeller 6'5" | SF Central Catholic | 2024 State OR was one of those guys – but that’s not the case anymore. Playing with More Than Hoop, the athletic 6-foot-5 swingman recently earned his first D-I offer and he’s hopeful that it’s the start of even more as he continues to play with the program when July rolls around.
“For sure, it’s been a new experience,” Zeller said. “It’s definitely fun playing with my guys. I’ve known all of them over the years so it’s cool to play with the people that I know. I’ve been able to work on my outside game with my passing and stuff like that, and also with my IQ. With my knees, it’s been hard lately to get into games but I’ve been trying to just help guys without being on the court.”
Zeller has always been a tremendous athlete and his physical maturity has come along as well. He’s continued to diversify his perimeter game and notes that this off-season his goals were to play with patience and playing off of two feet, and has been happy with how those things have gone. College coaches have noticed the work he’s put in.
“I’ve definitely picked up more interest over the spring and all that, and I’m looking to go to some camps this summer and I’m excited about all that,” Zeller said. “University of Montana, Idaho State, and UC San Diego – those are the ones I’ve been talking to personally, and then I know my coach has been talking to other colleges.”
Recently, Zeller achieved one of his goals this off-season. He picked up his first offer after a chat with Montana head coach Travis DeCuire. “Getting that offer means a lot to me and is something I’ve been working hard for a long time,” Zeller said. “I’ve heard that that coaching staff is really good and the same with the facilities and everything. I’m going on an official visit this week and I’m excited to meet everyone and see the campus.”
In general, Zeller described what he’s looking for in a college basketball program. “I’m trying to go to Division I, and then I would like to go somewhere in California which would be nice, but I’m not too focused on the location,” Zeller said. “It’s more about the school, the community that they have, and if I fit well with the team, not so much location.”
Things are still obviously still playing out with Zeller’s recruitment this June as he’s shifted gears to playing with Central Catholic. “I’m excited and I’m confident,” Zeller said. “We have four returning starters and we’ve got a lot of talent – we’re going to be better than last year for sure. We’re just getting all the individual improvement on our team and I’m excited for that.”
Zeller currently ranks as the #13 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2024 rankings.
