Jackson Weiland Jackson Weiland 6'0" | PG South Medford | 2024 State OR is working hard at changing that for himself and he remains hopeful he’ll catch the eyes of college coaches this summer. The tough 6-foot point guard ran with the Oregon Prospects this spring and now that June ball with his high school team is over, he’s ready to hit the road again with his club team.
“We’ve had a good spring and we just played some tough tournaments,” Weiland said. “We started off not so strong, but we’ve just gotten a lot better as a team, and it’s been good to get some exposure and playing against some with some good competition.”
Individually, Weiland has been happy with the way things have gone. In the games we have seen him play, he’s been shooting the ball well, getting into the lane finishing strong over bigger players, and making sure he keeps his teammates involved. “I just feel like I’m just kind of trying to polish everything all around,” Weiland said. “Just working on creating off the dribble, and I think my mid range game has been improving a lot and just creating for other teammates.”
Weiland is hopeful that college programs are watching. A very high-academic student who boasts a GPA over 1500, he’s aiming as high as possible when it comes to his recruitment and notes that schools such as George Fox and Oberlin have reached out so far. “I mean, just fit for basketball-wise and the culture is huge,” Weiland said of what he’s looking for in a college program. “And then I also want to go to a good academic school because that’s really important to me as well, so I’m just trying to find a good balance – somewhere I fit in well.”
In June, Weiland played with his South Medford teammates in preparation for next season and then in July he’ll return to the Prospects for more tournaments. “We’re going to have pretty much a brand new team next year, losing four seniors, and Bodie (Howell) is transferring out,” Weiland said. “So just kind of getting with those younger guys and just getting them used to playing at that speed at that varsity level will be huge. Just for me, I want to work on my game and hopefully get some more exposure, get some colleges to notice me, and just continue to get better as a team.”
Weiland currently ranks as the #7 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2024 rankings.
