It was billed as the top high school tournament in NorCal for the Spring and Summer. 64 teams playing in a tournament format with the winners advancing to play in the finals on Sunday at Modesto Christian. The Branson defeated Clovis North for the title on Sunday evening. PH was at Modesto Christian on Friday, and Central Catholic on Saturday Here’s who caught our attention.
AJ Morgan
AJ Morgan
Morgan a 6’3 forward with strength and a solid body played with well in the post. He was aggressive going after rebounds. He worked well from the mid-post with good passing, facing up, or using a dribble or two, he has a jump hook to get his shot off. He goes up strong on the put back.
Hunter is a fast guard with slick handles. He has the quickness to go by most defenders off the dribble, his speed pushing in transition is notable, he’s a willing passer. He has a good first step on the drive into the paint for kick-outs, dump offs, or points. He can hit the open 3ptr. He has the foot speed to stay on ball full court.
Mason Brown
Mason Brown
It was our first look at Brown a transfer from Durango HS in Vegas. He’s a quality guard with a good skill set. He can run point. At 6’3 he’s a good ball handling guard with vision, good passing and the ability to break down a defender with his dribble, and get his shot or pass in the paint. He knocked down numerous paint jumpers. We’ll see more.
He’s a physically strong player that moves well on the court. At 6’2 or 3, he’s the teams leading scorer and rebounder. He can do multiple things on the court, handle in transition, take it strong to the basket off the dribble, from the mid-post he can hit the jumper, he plays well off two feet, he hit a 3ptr. He defends bigger players.
He’s had a good Spring playing against quality competition. He’s playing more aggressive, handling the physical play that goes on when you defend and go after rebounds in the post area. He seems to have expanded his range, he hit a couple of 3’s, and made a few mid-range jumpers at this event.
Highlights
He’s playing good basketball now. At 6’7 he’s a legitimate go to guy in the post area if you need a bucket, he has the strength and toughness to get points around the basket, including dunks, and a consistent paint jumper. We saw him step out to hit a 3ptr, beat his man up the court in transition, and off the dribble from the high post. He’s a double double guy at this level.
We’re seeing more of what Jones can do on the court when he’s focused. The 2025 shooting guard can knock down 3ptrs at a good percentage, along the perimeter, in the corners, and transition. He’s strong enough with sneaky hops, and decent handles to finish at the rim through contact.
