There have already been some prospects that earned scholarship offers coming out of the event and there will be even more in the coming days as staffs getting together to debrief. Let’s dive in to six takeaways that I had from spending the day taking in the action, and talking to coaches, at the 2023 IBCA Top 100 Showcase.
Coaches out in Full Force for Flory Bidunga Flory Bidunga 6'9" | C Kokomo | 2024 State #7 Nation IN
It should come as no surprise, but the five-star Top 5 national prospect had a pretty impressive list of on-lookers throughout Session 1 of the IBCA Top 100 Showcase on Saturday. Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl, Cincinnati head coach Wes Miller, Indiana head coach Mike Woodson, Kansas head coach Bill Self, and Purdue head coach Matt Painter were on-site including assistants from the likes Duke, Michigan, Michigan State and many others who are trying to land the 6’9″ center from Kokomo High School.
Don’t Sleep on the Smaller Guards
Two of Indiana’s Class of 2024 most dynamic playmakers had their games on full display at Brownsburg High School. 5’7″ point guard Taray Howell Taray Howell 5'8" | PG Evansville Bosse | 2024 State IN (Evansville Bosse H.S. 2024) and 5’9″ point guard Jevon Lewis (Fort Wayne Wayne H.S. 2024) are so incredibly skilled with the basketball in their hands that it more than makes up for their small stature. Both of these guys routinely score at a high level in any setting. Howell and Lewis are Division I caliber prospects that should continue to see their recruitment pick up going into Charlie Hughes and the month of July.
Shooters Got Hot
Some of the state’s best shooters were in the gym on Saturday and poured it in from beyond the arc. Specifically, Kasen Daeger Kasen Daeger 6'3" | SG Silver Creek | 2026 State IN (Silver Creek H.S. 2026), Carter Kent (Jennings County H.S. 2025), and Joshua Renfro Joshua Renfro 6'2" | SG Christian Academy | 2025 State IN (Christian Academy 2025) all stood out while stretching the defense and knocking in multiple three-point attempts. The trio from southern Indiana each led their teams in scoring a year ago as a freshman, sophomore, and sophomore respectively. Additionally, they were a combined 179-461 from three-point range (38.8%). Each were excellent shooting the ball at the IBCA Top 100 Showcase.
Class of 2025 Stock-Risers
There were some rising juniors on Saturday that looked like guys who were poised to have their recruitment really take off in the coming weeks. Gavin Betten Gavin Betten 6'7" | PF Manchester | 2025 State IN (Manchester H.S. 2025), Grady Carpenter Grady Carpenter 6'5" | PG Tipton | 2025 State IN (Tipton H.S. 2025), Cole Henry (South Ripley H.S. 2025), Damien King Damien King 6'4" | SF Anderson | 2025 State IN (Anderson H.S. 2025), Dominique Murphy (East Chicago Central H.S. 2025), Jack Smiley Jack Smiley 6'2" | PG Valparaiso | 2025 State IN (Valparaiso H.S. 2025), Drew Snively Drew Snively 6'4" | SG Zionsville | 2025 State IN (Zionsville H.S. 2025), and Michael Wellman (Portage H.S. 2025) have a combined one Division I scholarship offer currently (IUPUI offered Murphy last week). Betten and Wellman currently hold Huntington offers as well. That is going to change by the end of July. All of these guys are scholarship level players and should at least be on the radar of DI coaches as well for the upcoming live periods.
Two 2024 Guards that Stood Out
Despite playing with a shoulder brace, Josiah Dunham Josiah Dunham 6'0" | PG Evansville Christian | 2024 State IN (Evansville Christian 2024) played as well as any guard at the IBCA Top 100. He was consistently scoring the ball off of the dribble from all three levels and looked the part of a guy who should see his offer list grow in the coming weeks. Dunham isn’t the biggest guard, but he is strong which he uses to play through contact and finish inside. Smooth jump shooter as well. Meanwhile, Evan Haywood (Brebeuf Jesuit 2024) continued his excellent spring/summer showing off his scoring ability on Saturday. The 6’4″ guard is an excellent shooter and keeps catching the eye of more and more college coaches at all levels.
Five Names to Remember in 2024
These prospects have varying levels of current college recruitment, but all should be on coaches radars as well head into Charle Hughes and the month of July. This group of five rising seniors really stood out on Saturday at the IBCA Top 100. Cole Hayworth Cole Hayworth 6'5" | SF Concordia Lutheran | 2024 State IN (Concordia Lutheran 2024), Grant Porath (Brownsburg H.S. 2024), Isaac Schultz Isaac Schultz 6'7" | C Adams Central | 2024 State IN (Adams Central H.S. 2024), Jacob Smith (Lake Central H.S. 2024), and Tucker Tornatta (Evansville Memorial 2024). There is something to like for each of these guys for coaches at the DII/DIII/NAIA levels.
